로그인Conrad's POV
The mug of steaming coffee sits on the desk in front of me while my gaze is fixed on the screen of my laptop as I type softly. I have things to settle before Diane's arrival so that when she does come, we can just talk and drink, nothing serious. "Don't tell me you already screwed her up." I scoff softly as Ward's question from last night rings in my ears. That bastard doesn't know his limit. I raise my brows when my phone begins ringing beside me. A smile lights up my face when I see who's calling. Is she that eager to see me? Is she here already? A lot of thoughts run through my mind even before I pick up, but the moment I do, my face falls, the smile disappears as if it was never there, and my jaw hardens. A sniffle. That's the first thing I hear, and my skull reboots, my grip tightening around the phone. Then her voice comes, soft, low, too low, as if she fears someone else might hear her. I stand from the chair without even realizing it. "What happened?" I ask straight up, wondering what could have happened that she has to call me, that too while trying to stop herself from crying. She sniffles again, and it's as if my head is ticking. "They... They came to get me." They? Who are they and why? "Can you wire 10,000 dollars into my account right now? I'll work for it when I stop by today." She says, and for a moment everything pauses, just her words echoing in my skull. "Don't say no, please. They'll really take me with them if I'm unable to provide the..." That's all my brain can calm down to hear before I cut in. "Just hang on, I'm coming." I don't wait for her response. I reach for my car keys from the table, grab the jacket hanging on the arm of my chair, and the next minute I'm bolting out of the study, my footsteps echoing off the walls. I barely hear my house staff greeting me. I just walk, no pause, until I reach the parking lot. I shove myself in, turn the wheel, and I'm zooming out of the lot. I can still hear her occasional sniffs from the speaker since I didn't bother to disconnect the call. Then the voices, two different hoarse voices, blare out through the speaker, loud, dangerous, tinged with warning. As if they deliberately want me to hear that they're threatening her, as if they want to test my patience and see what I'll do. I don't say a word and never react to anything they say. I drive calmly, not because I lack words, not because I have nothing to do to them, but because Diane is still in their hold, and a single wrong move from me could cost her something I'm not prepared for. Diane is my secretary, and I have to come to her rescue now that she's asked me to. I turn off the car engine the moment I get to her apartment. I push the car door open, and with five long strides, I'm in front of her door. I don't knock, don't bother to. I twist the door handle and the door pulls open. The heavy stench of smoke is the first thing that slams into my nose, but that's the least of my worries. I'm here for Diane. My gaze sweeps across the room, and my eyes dwindle when I see her. Face tear-streaked, sitting in the midst of those fucking bastards, and they're... oh God, smoking. Who the hell are they, and how the eff did she get mixed up with such scum? "Sir..." She whispers, but I notice how shaky her voice is and how she makes no attempt to stand up from their midst. They probably forced her to sit there and ordered her not to stand even on my arrival. Freaks!! I take another step, but my bones crack and my eyes widen when I see it. Jesus. She's still dressed in her nightie, and those goddamn animals are feasting their eyes on her. That's all it takes before the thread of patience in me snaps. I move, literally like lightning, and within seconds I'm with them. I have no business with those two, so I shove past, grab Diane, and before they can react, she's standing at my back while I stand in front of the two. "Who the hell..." Fuck!!! I turn my gaze away from him, wipe my face, then turn back to face them. "Cover your mouth whenever you intend to speak. Your breath stinks." I say. I don't say it to spite him or whatever, but honestly, his breath stinks and I almost, throw up everything I had last night. His face squeezes into a frown. He drops his smoke and stands to face me. "Who the hell do you think you are? A knight in shining armor?" he scoffs, his gaze blazing with rage. "I'm her boss, so yeah, that technically makes me her knight in shining armor!" I reply nonchalantly, crossing my arms. The other huffs, his expression hardening. "Dude's got some balls." he says, standing up too. I chuckle, not the kind one, but the "my time is too precious to spend on idiots" kind. Then I turn to Diane. "How much do you owe them?" I ask. The two guys share a look, then scoff. I pull out my phone and make the transaction after Diane replies. But freaks don't stop until they have their teeth knocked out and their bones crushed, do they? Because the next minute, one throws a heavy, brutal punch at my face, earning a gasp from Diane, who quickly holds my hand, while the other erupts into mocking laughter. "He's got no balls. He's bleeding from a single punch. What happens if I punch him too?" Their laughter fills the background once more. I hiss, wiping my lips with my fingertip. "He already cleared my debt, so you two should stop and leave my house." Diane snaps, still holding my hand. I slowly take my hand away from hers. "Just wait outside, Diane. Freaks will always be freaks, and they do need their bones reset, at least once in a while."Diane's POVIs it only me, or is Conrad's scandal fading already? With the scandal handled by his PR team, none of the trouble falls on him, and it's been fading away as quickly as it spread. Conrad would love it. It's all he ever wanted. The scandal fading away means an end is coming to our contract sooner than I expected. I haven't gotten attached to him, only to all the things he has to offer me in return for accepting to do this with him."Are you even with me?" Conrad's voice echoes."Yes. Yes, I'm with you." I reply, batting my eyelashes. I didn't mean to be carried away with my thoughts.I'm worried for myself. The contract ending means I'll go back to being a stripper in one of the most patronized clubs in the city. That isn't me saying I'm not used to that life anymore.Conrad pays me so well, and I've gotten comfortable with being paid so well. To get the amount he pays me, I'd have to work in the club all nigh
Conrad's POVClubbing has become one of my least favorite things to do. It could be because I've been occupied with work lately; it can't be because I'm worried there might be a repeat of the last time. Here I am in front of a club, one of the private clubs in the city. I drove myself down here because it feels like I'm losing my spark, and the best way to reignite it seems to be clubbing.Everyone knows me to be the bubbly type and a nightlife lover, and I don't want that to change. I have a cap on my head, and since it's late in the night, no one should be able to recognize me."Time to unwind." I coo, and proceed to step inside.I left all my problems to Ward to handle, and it was the right decision. He has a team dedicated to solving all my problems, and it has been like that for the longest time. Whoever is stalking Diane will be caught soon. She got herself a new number, and it was my idea. I gave her strict instructions not to give anyone besides me her new contact, not her col
Diane's POVI step into the office breathing heavily. I'm two minutes late to work. I did all I could to avoid it, and that included running from the compound straight to the second floor in heels.Conrad won't go easy on me for being late. He doesn't care to know that I went to bed late, all because I was scared someone might break down my door and come for me after he left.I drop my laptop on my table and try to catch my breath. I don't look in a mirror, but I know my hair is a mess already. I ran without putting it into consideration."Mr. Conrad would like to see you." A colleague walks up to me and says. It's bad that I don't know her name, and it's like that with the rest of them too. Months in this office and I'm still a stranger.I smooth down my skirt, pat my hair twice, and give up on both. Then I pick up my phone from my bag. I already know the words Conrad will speak to me when I show up in front of him, which could be why I'm not fidgety. They won't be nice, I know. I tr
Diane's POV"Somehow, the footage we need to find out about the culprit is missing.""How is that possible?" I'm quick to ask."Whoever the culprit is, he's good at things like this."The CCTV footage would have helped us get to the bottom of the matter. I relied on it. The culprit decided to stay one step ahead of us, and that was wise of them."I have a feeling whoever is behind this is someone who knows you and me." I tell him."You might be right and you might be wrong."I heave a deep sigh that isn't of relief. Until we find out the identity of the culprit, my life is at risk. I can't say the same for Conrad because he has bodyguards looking after him.Ever since he dropped me off at work, I've been thinking about who could be behind this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Perhaps Conrad is right, and this has to do with him and not me."Don't worry about anything. I have things under control." He interrupts the silence. He definitely says that so I can feel better."I ha
Diane's POVWhoever wants to make my life a living hell more than it already is, I have no idea. I can't stop thinking about who could be behind the anonymous messages, but I have no clue yet.I roll from one end of the bed to the other. I find it hard to fall asleep, and it could be because I know someone has been monitoring me closely, and the person sure doesn't have good plans for me."I have to make sure I lock the door." I mutter and get off the bed. Some minutes ago, I checked the door and found it properly locked, and I'm on my way to check it again. It's safe to say I'm scared of what might be coming. This might be a good time to have my friend come stay with me for a few days. Her company might make me feel safe. I get to the door and check again. It's properly locked. To get to work on time tomorrow, I must sleep early, but what do I do when sleep isn't forthcoming? Drinking to a stupor is definitely not an option. I don't want a hangover tomorrow.I look all around while r
Conrad's POV"You came at the right time." I say to Ward as he walks closely behind me."I do all the time. I have a feeling I'm about to save your ass again like I always do." He responds.I sit on the sofa in the living room. I had a long day at work and I know I ought to go straight to my room for a shower, but there's something important I want to share with Ward.He sits next to me, his eyes fixed on the television screen. My team and his are playing today, which must be the main reason he came, but I'm not in the mood for banter tonight."You kept me waiting at your door. I thought you'd close from work by 5pm. Did you go somewhere after work today?""Yes." I coo."I told you to give me one of your spare keys, but you refused. If you had, I wouldn't have had to wait at the door for hours." He mutters. He's my best friend, but I'm not willing to give him unrestricted access to my space for no personal reason. I take off my suit and take a deep breath. It feels like the right thin
