Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Three Goats
Andrew abruptly looked back and called after me. "What you said about calling off our engagement—were you serious about it?"

I stopped and turned to meet his gaze.

"Yes."

His face immediately darkened with displeasure.

Mom came out of her room and glared at me irritably. "Sophia Ward! Wasn't your phony attempt to run away from home enough? Now you're using your engagement to throw another tantrum? You're doing all this just because you're jealous of a sick person?

"How on earth did we spoil you so much that you've lost even the most basic sense of empathy!"

I clenched the hem of my blouse, a dull ache spreading through my heart. "I'm not throwing a tantrum. I'm serious about calling off the engagement."

Suddenly, Eliza collapsed to the floor and writhed in pain while clutching her stomach.

"Ellie!"

Mom and Owen immediately rushed over to cradle her. Andrew didn't spare me another glance either. He hurried to the storage cabinet and pulled out some medicine.

"It's happening again! Get some warm water so she can take her medicine!"

Owen expertly patted Eliza's back.

The three of them crowded around her in a panic, as if they would gladly take her pain upon themselves if they could.

It felt as though my heart had been cut into pieces. My breathing suddenly grew rapid. Then my vision went black, my legs gave way, and I collapsed to the floor. The back of my head struck the corner of the table with a dull thud.

Owen glanced back, his expression frustrated. "Sophia! When are you going to stop putting on these little performances? Every time Ellie feels unwell, you suddenly feel unwell, too. What are the odds? Do you really have to get jealous at a time like this?"

I clutched my stomach, which was throbbing with unbearable pain, as cold sweat broke out all over my body.

Andrew didn't even lift his head. "Sophia, it's time you started acting your age. Stop pretending. We're not going to come running to comfort you. Has anyone gotten Ellie her warm water yet?"

I struggled to push my upper body off the floor. I reached into my pocket, but my hand came up empty. I'd packed my painkillers into my suitcase. I wanted to get up and retrieve them, but I couldn't summon even the slightest bit of strength.

"Owen." My voice was hoarse as I pleaded with him. "I'm in pain. Could you get my medicine for me? It's in that suitcase."

He was busy wiping the sweat from Eliza's face. Hearing me, he let out a heavy sigh.

"Sophia, I honestly don't know what happened to you. I watched you grow up. Don't you think I can tell when you're in pain and when you're lying?"

He picked up an empty bottle from the table and tossed it in front of me. "Does this look familiar?"

I lowered my head and struggled to make out the object through my blurred vision. It was my medicine bottle. However, someone had changed the label. It now looked more like a candy container.

"You couldn't even make your act seem more convincing. You dumped some tablets into a bottle meant for candy, and you expect us to fall for it? Can you stop resorting to these pathetic tricks, Sophia?"

Apart from Eliza, no one else would go to such lengths to pull something like this.

"That isn't candy." My vision blurred as I fought to keep my voice from breaking.

"You expect me to believe that just because you say so?" Owen shot back. "I took everything out of the bottle and had it tested. It's just candy.

"Now drop the act, Sophia. I'm not in the mood to have you playing me for a fool every single day."

Without sparing me another glance, he turned back to Eliza and carefully patted her soothingly while wiping her sweat once more.

I stopped begging for help. Bracing myself on my elbows, I gritted my teeth and slowly dragged myself back to my room.

The moment I closed the door, I could no longer hold it in. A mouthful of blood spilled from my mouth. My entire body ached, and I was freezing.

I found the painkillers tucked away in a corner of my bedside table. I poured out the last two tablets and crushed them between my teeth, the bitterness filling my mouth. My throat was parched, and the medicine took its time to work.

I curled up in a corner of the bed, scratching at my arms over and over as the pain overwhelmed me. My mind drifted back to the days before Eliza came along, when I was still the apple of my family's eye.

Back then, if I so much as scraped my skin, Mom would cry until her eyes were swollen and red.

"Sophia, you're Mommy's angel. Mommy can't bear to see you get hurt."

Their love had been real. But now, they had someone they loved more.

Footsteps sounded outside, followed by Andrew's soft, low voice. "Don't make so much noise, or you're going to wake Ellie."

I instinctively wiped away my tears and struggled to pull the blanket over myself. The next second, the bedroom door opened, and Andrew walked in. Seeing me huddled in the corner with the blanket pulled over me, he assumed I was throwing another tantrum.

"Stop pretending. I heard you pulling the blanket over yourself."

He came closer, and when he stepped on my phone, he picked it up without a second thought.

I poked my head out from under the blanket. "What are you doing here?"

My voice was unbearably hoarse.

"Ellie has finally managed to fall asleep. You've been acting up far too much lately. I'm worried you'll suddenly start another scene and disturb her. I'm taking your phone to prevent you from pulling another stunt just to get our attention."

He slipped my phone into his pocket. When I reached up to snatch it back, he caught my thin wrist in one hand. He didn't even squeeze hard, yet I couldn't move.

"Sophia, can you stop being such a schemer for once? Once Ellie's condition improves, I'll take you to pick out a new wedding gown. You went too far tonight, so just stay in your room and clear your head."

He released my wrist and turned to leave. The key turned with a faint click, and the door locked from the outside.

Owen and Andrew immediately caught Mom and helped her to a hospital bed to get some rest. When Owen came out of the hospital room, his eyes were bloodshot, and his hands were clenched into fists."Where's Eliza?"Andrew stood beside him. "She didn't come with us. She said she was sick and needed to rest."Owen let out a laugh, his voice hoarse. "Sophia was the one who was sick. Why would Eliza need any rest?"When they returned home, Owen played the surveillance footage in front of Eliza. Her face grew paler and paler. With tears in her eyes, she tried to excuse her actions the way she always used to."I didn't mean for things to turn out this way. You both know how terrible my circumstances were. I never received any love, and it's all I long for. How could I not get jealous when I saw how much you guys doted on Sophia? I…"Sophia got to have everything she could possibly want from the moment she was born! Why did she get to enjoy such a good life? All I wanted was to experienc

Mom jerked her head up, her gaze sharp as it fell on Eliza. "You lied? You don't have pancreatic cancer?"Eliza looked panicked. "How could that be, Mom? You know I've always been sensible and well-behaved. I'm not like Sophia. Why would I ever lie to you guys?"Owen turned his gaze to Eliza as well. Something seemed to occur to him, and his expression shifted."If you have pancreatic cancer, why did you willingly drink alcohol that day?"Someone with cancer couldn't possibly drink alcohol.Eliza's eyes reddened again. "I thought you knew why, Owen. I only did it because I was so happy that day. After all, I can't live for much longer anyway. I know you're all sad because of Sophia's death, but… My days are numbered, too…"Silence fell over the dining table once more.Eliza turned to Dr. Fleming. "I really don't understand why you're accusing me of lying. The test results proved that I have pancreatic cancer. My family loves me so much. What reason would I have to lie to them?"

Mom frowned. "What's wrong?"She shoved Owen aside and tried her best to pull me up from the floor. However, my body was as rigid as a rotting log of wood. My hands were ice-cold, without the slightest trace of warmth. The horrifying possibility that popped into Mom's head made her stumble backward.Just then, Dr. Fleming entered the room. He took out a flashlight with one hand and gently lifted my eyelid with the other. The light shone into my pupil, but there was no reaction. He straightened back up and sighed. "My condolences. Sophia no longer shows any sign of life. Judging from the state of her body, she most likely died sometime between 10:00 pm last night and 2:00 am this morning.""That's impossible!" As if grasping at straws, Owen shook his head frantically. "We came to her room at 11:00 pm last night. She was perfectly fine then! She can't be dead. How could she be dead..."Dr. Fleming remained unfazed. "This is just my preliminary guess. Besides, did you actually see h

Andrew remained frozen at the door, unable to speak."Who's at the door?" Owen walked over and nudged him to the side.Dr. Fleming studied them both before explaining his purpose again. This time, he handed over the critical condition notice."I personally examined Sophia and diagnosed her. We ran a lot of tests, so there's no mistake. You may find this difficult to accept, but... I'm sorry. She agreed to donate her corneas, so that's why I'm here today. May I come in now?"Owen was completely stunned. Despite holding the critical condition notice in his hands, he couldn't seem to make sense of the words. It was only two sheets of paper, but they felt impossibly heavy in his hands, which were trembling hard.Andrew stepped aside to let the doctor in.Just then, Mom emerged from the kitchen carrying a plate of pasta. She looked curiously at the unfamiliar young man, then glanced at Andrew and Owen standing by the door."If we have a guest over, why aren't you two inviting him pr

"Stop pretending and get up!" Andrew snapped with a frown, but his voice betrayed a tremor he didn't even realize was there. He grabbed my wrist and tried to pull me up, but my body was completely rigid. The moment he lifted me, I immediately slipped back down. My arms fell limply to my side.Andrew had read a few medical books. Perhaps that was precisely why he didn't dare touch me again."Why is it taking you so long to get her? Is she throwing another tantrum and refusing to come out of her room?"Owen walked in. When he caught sight of me lying on the floor, he sneered, as if he'd predicted this."Sophia, let me make this clear one more time—if you want us to spend time with you, just say so. Don't resort to these kinds of tricks. These fake acts of yours are only going to exhaust what little patience we have left!"He paused for a few seconds, waiting to see how I'd react, but the figure on the floor remained completely motionless."You still won't drop the act, huh?"Owen

The faint click of the lock struck my heart like a heavy hammer. I had to brace myself against the edge of the bed. I couldn't believe Andrew had actually locked me inside my own room."Andrew, open the door!"Furious and frantic, I summoned every ounce of strength I had and pounded on the door, but Owen's harsh rebuke came from the other side."Quit making a scene, Sophia! We're only doing this for your own good. You've become a compulsive liar! You're going to spend some time alone to reflect on your wrongdoings! "We're taking Ellie out tomorrow to get some fresh air and feel better. We have no time to play these stupid games with you."Their footsteps grew fainter and fainter until they disappeared completely.I slid helplessly to the floor. The pain in my body suddenly intensified. It hit me then that the painkillers weren't working anymore. I bit down hard on my lip and clutched my stomach, trying to endure the agony the way I had so many times before.Nevertheless, the pa
