Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Three Goats
The faint click of the lock struck my heart like a heavy hammer. I had to brace myself against the edge of the bed. I couldn't believe Andrew had actually locked me inside my own room.

"Andrew, open the door!"

Furious and frantic, I summoned every ounce of strength I had and pounded on the door, but Owen's harsh rebuke came from the other side.

"Quit making a scene, Sophia! We're only doing this for your own good. You've become a compulsive liar! You're going to spend some time alone to reflect on your wrongdoings!

"We're taking Ellie out tomorrow to get some fresh air and feel better. We have no time to play these stupid games with you."

Their footsteps grew fainter and fainter until they disappeared completely.

I slid helplessly to the floor. The pain in my body suddenly intensified. It hit me then that the painkillers weren't working anymore. I bit down hard on my lip and clutched my stomach, trying to endure the agony the way I had so many times before.

Nevertheless, the pain surged like erupting lava, and every muscle in my body trembled uncontrollably.

"It hurts so much..."

Desperate, I wanted to call for help, but when I reached for my phone, I remembered that it had been taken away.

Right at that moment, cheerful music and bright, happy laughter came from outside my door.

"Ellie, it's time to open your presents." Mom's voice was as gentle as it had always been when she spoke to me in the past.

Only this time, her words weren't directed at me.

"Oh my gosh! This dress is gorgeous, and there's cake, too! Mom, Owen, Andy, I love this surprise! I love you all!" Eliza's voice brimmed with happiness and affection. "But... You've all been so good to me. If Sophia finds out, she'll definitely be upset..."

"Why bring her up?" Andrew's voice was cold. "If she'd get upset over something like this, that just proves we still need to teach her a lesson for being such a spoiled princess.

"Exactly," Owen chimed in. "Don't worry about what she thinks, Ellie. As long as you're happy, that's all that matters. Here's a pair of pearl earrings for you. They'll go perfectly with your dress."

With my back against the cold wall, I listened to them take turns soothing her with tender words. A sharp cramp seized my abdomen, and my breathing quickened.

Then my vision went black. My body pitched forward uncontrollably, and I vomited a mouthful of dark red fluid. My body burned feverishly before turning icy cold. Gradually, even the sensation of pain began to fade.

It kept getting harder for me to breathe. Soon, it felt like someone was choking me. Before I collapsed, I remembered Dr. Fleming's warning.

"You must try to avoid emotional distress. Any form of agitation might cause internal bleeding, and you could go into shock and die."

I'd arranged for Dr. Fleming to pick me up tomorrow afternoon, so that I could donate my corneas. It looked like I was going to have to break my promise.

I couldn't stop myself from toppling sideways, my head striking the floor with a dull thud. Light spilling in from beneath the door illuminated my eyes.

All my anger and grievances faded away, leaving me strangely at peace.

For more than a decade, I'd clung desperately to the hope of earning their love and their unwavering trust. Now that I was taking my dying breath, none of it mattered anymore.

I no longer longed for Mom's worried gaze, which was always directed at someone else. I no longer waited for Owen's warm hand, the one that instinctively reached out to help someone else first.

And I no longer yearned for the soup Andrew would spend so much time carefully preparing for someone else.

Every longing and expectation faded along with my consciousness. Everything went quiet and cold.

I closed my eyes and let the darkness swallow my thoughts.

…

The next morning, sunlight flooded the quiet room. There was a click, and the door swung open.

"Sophia, have you reflected on your actions yet?" Andrew's voice was still stern, though his tone had softened ever so slightly.

He raised the gift bag in his hand and continued, "Ellie knows you're in a bad mood, so she specifically asked us to save this necklace for you. Accept the gift and stop fighting with her. Let's put this whole thing behind us."

Andrew waited patiently for a few seconds, but no response came. The room was terrifyingly silent.

Frowning, he walked over to the bed and pulled back the covers, only to find the bed empty. He turned his head and saw me lying behind the door.

"Sophia?" Out of habit, he adopted his usual irritated, impatient tone. "What kind of stunt are you trying to pull this time?"

He reached out to pull me to my feet, but the moment he touched me, he was startled by how cold and stiff my arm was.

The sunlight shifted, illuminating my stiff, deathly pale face.

Andrew froze.

Owen and Andrew immediately caught Mom and helped her to a hospital bed to get some rest. When Owen came out of the hospital room, his eyes were bloodshot, and his hands were clenched into fists."Where's Eliza?"Andrew stood beside him. "She didn't come with us. She said she was sick and needed to rest."Owen let out a laugh, his voice hoarse. "Sophia was the one who was sick. Why would Eliza need any rest?"When they returned home, Owen played the surveillance footage in front of Eliza. Her face grew paler and paler. With tears in her eyes, she tried to excuse her actions the way she always used to."I didn't mean for things to turn out this way. You both know how terrible my circumstances were. I never received any love, and it's all I long for. How could I not get jealous when I saw how much you guys doted on Sophia? I…"Sophia got to have everything she could possibly want from the moment she was born! Why did she get to enjoy such a good life? All I wanted was to experienc

Mom jerked her head up, her gaze sharp as it fell on Eliza. "You lied? You don't have pancreatic cancer?"Eliza looked panicked. "How could that be, Mom? You know I've always been sensible and well-behaved. I'm not like Sophia. Why would I ever lie to you guys?"Owen turned his gaze to Eliza as well. Something seemed to occur to him, and his expression shifted."If you have pancreatic cancer, why did you willingly drink alcohol that day?"Someone with cancer couldn't possibly drink alcohol.Eliza's eyes reddened again. "I thought you knew why, Owen. I only did it because I was so happy that day. After all, I can't live for much longer anyway. I know you're all sad because of Sophia's death, but… My days are numbered, too…"Silence fell over the dining table once more.Eliza turned to Dr. Fleming. "I really don't understand why you're accusing me of lying. The test results proved that I have pancreatic cancer. My family loves me so much. What reason would I have to lie to them?"

Mom frowned. "What's wrong?"She shoved Owen aside and tried her best to pull me up from the floor. However, my body was as rigid as a rotting log of wood. My hands were ice-cold, without the slightest trace of warmth. The horrifying possibility that popped into Mom's head made her stumble backward.Just then, Dr. Fleming entered the room. He took out a flashlight with one hand and gently lifted my eyelid with the other. The light shone into my pupil, but there was no reaction. He straightened back up and sighed. "My condolences. Sophia no longer shows any sign of life. Judging from the state of her body, she most likely died sometime between 10:00 pm last night and 2:00 am this morning.""That's impossible!" As if grasping at straws, Owen shook his head frantically. "We came to her room at 11:00 pm last night. She was perfectly fine then! She can't be dead. How could she be dead..."Dr. Fleming remained unfazed. "This is just my preliminary guess. Besides, did you actually see h

Andrew remained frozen at the door, unable to speak."Who's at the door?" Owen walked over and nudged him to the side.Dr. Fleming studied them both before explaining his purpose again. This time, he handed over the critical condition notice."I personally examined Sophia and diagnosed her. We ran a lot of tests, so there's no mistake. You may find this difficult to accept, but... I'm sorry. She agreed to donate her corneas, so that's why I'm here today. May I come in now?"Owen was completely stunned. Despite holding the critical condition notice in his hands, he couldn't seem to make sense of the words. It was only two sheets of paper, but they felt impossibly heavy in his hands, which were trembling hard.Andrew stepped aside to let the doctor in.Just then, Mom emerged from the kitchen carrying a plate of pasta. She looked curiously at the unfamiliar young man, then glanced at Andrew and Owen standing by the door."If we have a guest over, why aren't you two inviting him pr

"Stop pretending and get up!" Andrew snapped with a frown, but his voice betrayed a tremor he didn't even realize was there. He grabbed my wrist and tried to pull me up, but my body was completely rigid. The moment he lifted me, I immediately slipped back down. My arms fell limply to my side.Andrew had read a few medical books. Perhaps that was precisely why he didn't dare touch me again."Why is it taking you so long to get her? Is she throwing another tantrum and refusing to come out of her room?"Owen walked in. When he caught sight of me lying on the floor, he sneered, as if he'd predicted this."Sophia, let me make this clear one more time—if you want us to spend time with you, just say so. Don't resort to these kinds of tricks. These fake acts of yours are only going to exhaust what little patience we have left!"He paused for a few seconds, waiting to see how I'd react, but the figure on the floor remained completely motionless."You still won't drop the act, huh?"Owen
