Amelia's POV

Our dwelling our dwelling that surprisingly felt intimate enough to call unreal welcomed us with a completely different kind of silence.

I slipped off my shoes while he was hanging his jacket. I turned quickly.

He kept looking at me.

Not looking like a counterfeit spouse.

Not the way a man playing a role looks.

Not pushing.

Not demanding.

Just approaching.

Until I caught myself raising my chin to keep meeting his eyes.

“Amelia," he said softly.

His tone was, like that of a person trying to evade flames but unable to withstand their attraction.

“Hm?” my voice was barely there.

“May I hold you?”

A simple question.

It felt as if I had abruptly found myself in a place I had never been before and I was uncertain, about how much time had gone by.

I could have declined. I could have said I needed time. I could have protected myself as I usually did.
