Chapter 126: The Ticket Office
The roosters had hardly started crowing when the four researchers pulled out of the driveway. It was a cool morning and they were all garbed in sweaters. Renz was driving the car that Lisa saw in the parking area the previous day and by his side was Delia who was still trying to catch some sleep.
Lisa was at the back seat with Nestie. She tried to stifle a yawn, but was finally unable to suppress it after hearing Nestie yawn by her side. They said that yawning is contagious, it looks like it's true, mused Lisa.
After receiving permission from Nestie to take the extra day off, the researchers all celebrated by ordering pizza and planning on what they would do the next day. Renz expressed his desire to go to the beach and practice surfing. Delia was keen on joining Renz and learn windsurfing. The woman held on to her hat as she and her boyfriend fell backwards onto the deck. The crowd made a collective gasp at first, but upon seeing the couple unharmed, jeered and whistled. The woman's head bobbed above the surface of the water, her eyes wide open and visibly scared. Her boyfriend continued to shout for help, but was not able to do anything else. The bus that Lisa and Nestie were riding seemed to belong to a repair shop rather than the road. Its metal body was in desperate need of paint, its wooden seats did not have cushions, and the windows were merely openings on the side of the bus, having no glass to protect the passengers from the elements. It was fortunate that the bus was traveling westward and the last of the sun's rays were disappearing on the horizon. Lisa opened the door to the guest room and switched on the lights. As she looked at the familiar furniture and the large windows at the opposite wall, memories of her childhood came flooding back. It was her own room that she shared with Celie when they were still very young. The two beds, placed on opposite sides of the room, were still there although the covers had been replaced with plain blue cloths instead of the seashell prints whose details Lisa could still remember.
