Chapter 2 I'm the Third Wheel

ผู้เขียน: Fluffy Cat
The two exchanged a glance.

Then, two smiles broke out on their faces, and their eyes curled in amusement.

Finally, they let out a sigh of relief.

Malcolm wrapped his arm around my shoulder and shook his head. "Don't be silly, Elliot. You always pull the same stunt when you crave attention. Here you go again."

Salome nodded in agreement.

I clenched my fists, pressing my lips into a taut line as fury took over me. Little did they know, I was never kidding. It was just that they had never taken my words seriously.

I caved in every single time only because I couldn't afford to lose them. However, they took it for granted and continued to mock me.

Finally, I turned around and walked away in the opposite direction.

…

Behind me, Malcolm had the guts to bet on my anger.

"How long will it take him to crawl back to us this time?"

She giggled. "Not longer than three days. He can never hold grudges against us for too long."

I stumbled into the darker street ahead toward the pickup location.

The driver had been waiting for a long time.

His patience was bottoming out as he flicked the cigarette ash out the window. However, his demeanor softened when he spotted the dejected look on my face.

I took the backseat, staring at the scenery flashing past the car.

Suddenly, it hit me.

My initial plan was to look for them and see if we could hang out tonight.

If they couldn't make time for me, I would just wait until they could spare me a moment.

Ever since youth, I had been considered the third wheel among us.

They were placed in the same class during the first semester of our senior year in high school.

…

A classmate stopped me when I tried to visit them during recess and mocked me.

"Elliot, quit fitting in where you don't belong. What do you know about the top students? Can you even understand them? Don't you feel out of place?"

Back then, I was briefly stunned before I jumped to their defense and argued that they wouldn't sideline me.

After graduating from university, I struggled to land a job, while their competitive streaks had led them to work in the same company.

They had never gotten along.

Therefore, I was constantly forced to choose between them. I put in a good word for one to the other.

Never had I expected them to cast aside their prejudice, along with my place in their hearts.

The lights in the stairwell were broken. I couldn't see it clearly in the dark.

When I turned on the flashlight on my phone, I noticed a notification of Malcolm's new Facebook story. He'd taken a photo of Salome's side profile. The dazzling glow had softened her usually clenched jaw, and there was a tender smile on her face.

Before today, he had always kept his profile private, but now, he had opened it to public view.

I scrolled down his Facebook page.

There was an endless stream of photos they had taken together.

They had gone to many places and left footprints there: mountains, streets, seaside, under the blue sky…

The sight of the smiling faces took me aback.

…

When I snapped out of my trance, I removed the photo from the frame hanging on the living room wall and tore it into tiny pieces.

I had taken it when they weren't paying attention.

They hated being photographed, so I snapped a photo of them, photoshopped it next to my headshot, and framed it.

I even felt proud that none of them suspected me.

It turned out they had already taken countless photos together without me.

Salome began to visit the shop frequently. On the first day, I threw the pot of orchids she brought into the bin without hesitation. On the second day, she waited outside the flower shop until closing time.On the third day, she showed me the sets of spare keys she somehow managed to retrieve."Elliot, I bought the apartment. You can move back whenever you want…"I simply walked away from her without stopping.…On the sixth day, I spotted two familiar faces by the roadside.Malcolm had returned to our hometown as well. He was having a fight with Salome. He usually cared about his appearance, but on that day, I found a disheveled man before me. His hair was messily draped over his face."Get away from me, you psychopath… If I'm mad, it's your fault for driving me mad back then!"I recoiled from disgust. I turned on my heel to take a detour, but someone called out, "Elliot."I turned to look at the speaker. It was Malcolm. His calm eyes were brimming with fathomless sorro

  • Walking Away on Our Tenth Anniversary   Chapter 7 A Fresh Start

In my third month back in my hometown, I settled down at a flower shop.I lived a leisurely life, leaving my past in the city. It was entertaining tending to various flowers in the shop daily. Many customers praised my work."It's beautiful. I'm definitely coming back next time."Nobody would call me stupid or too dense.I didn't yearn for the fast-paced city life, nor did I dwell on Salome and Malcolm's catchphrase.…"Just sit back and relax, Elliot. We've got everything covered."It turned out my life was easier when I was finally in my element. It took me almost thirty years to learn this. Fortunately, it was never too late.Someone entered the shop. The wind chime hanging on the door chimed melodiously as the door was pushed open.A gentle voice reached my ears. "A bouquet of ice-blue roses, thanks."I hummed in response and looked up to greet the customer."It's great to see you again, Ms. Ashford."A smile curled Selene's lips as she nodded gently.Over the past th

They have been together for ten years. I have no idea how the real boyfriend turned into a secret lover."Someone in the private room played the audio attached to the post.It sounded as though it had been exported from surveillance footage, but she wouldn't mistake Malcolm's voice for someone else's.When she heard Malcolm asking Elliot to do him one last f

At dawn, Salome applied her makeup in front of a full-length mirror. There were no new messages on her phone.Usually at this point, Elliot would've long since begged for her forgiveness via audio messages."I'm sorry, Princess."Yet this time, there wasn't a single message from him.The strange feeling hovered above her head.Meanwhile, Malcolm made an omelette and slid it onto her plate. Her cutlery scraped against the plate as she started eating breakfast.Startled, he glanced at her. "What's wrong, Salome?"She whispered, "Has Elliot contacted you?"He was taken aback for a second. He eventually shook his head and offered her a reassuring smile."Don't worry about him. You know Elliot. He won't hold grudges against us. Besides, the three of us have been spending time together for a decade. He can never bring himself to cut ties with us."His comfort sounded plausible, which fueled her confidence. After all, they both knew Elliot could never stay mad at her.Still, an u

Soaking in the rain the day before resulted in an unexpectedly high fever.I lay on the bed and held up the thermometer to check it.My body temperature had reached 103°F, and my head was spinning.…Before I could order a ride to the hospital, I heard a noise in the living room.I rushed out of the bedroom and was met with Salome's reddened eyes. She was glaring at me while holding Malcolm's hand. She slammed her phone on the coffee table with a loud thud and faced me with a darkened expression. "Look at what you've done, Elliot."She stopped closer to me and confronted me.I stared at her blankly. My mind was still processing her accusation when her malicious words reached my ears."Yesterday was an exception. Just because we left you to hail a ride on your own, you let jealousy blind your reason? Can't you just admit that Malcolm is better than you? Do you have to ruin his future?"The weight of her words crushed me.I snapped out of my stupor and found a post written fro

The landlord called to remind me of my upcoming rent."Elliot, it's almost time to pay up. Let me know by next Wednesday whether you're renewing the lease or not."I hummed in acknowledgement. After sitting in silence for a while, I began to pack my things, including the game console I bought for Malcolm, the pot of orchids for Salome, and the trinkets that reminded me of all the good times.I always bought things in three sets.Even the apartment I rented featured three bedrooms and a living room.I also prepared two sets of keys for them. The apartment was a sanctuary for me in the busy and fast-paced city life.
