Chapter 1 Wake Up From a Dream

ผู้เขียน: Fluffy Cat
"Don't be mean."

Malcolm ruffled Salome's hair. When an idea occurred to him, he let out a chuckle.

"Salome, do you reckon Elliot would find out we have been secretly together for over three years any time soon?"

She nuzzled against his cheek affectionately.

"There's no way a dense man like him could ever figure it out. Come on, the fireworks are starting. Forget about him."

I was rooted to the spot.

I watched as the couple walked away from the stall holding hands and drifted into silhouettes.

…

Nearby, a countdown to the fireworks display appeared on the digital screen.

The crowd counted down in anticipation.

"Three! Two! One!"

As midnight fell, golden sparks struck across the night sky before pouring down like drizzling rain.

I had woken from my decade-long dream.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

After disappearing on me for an entire day, Malcolm finally deigned to reply to my message.

"Elliot, I'm sorry I was occupied yesterday and didn't hang out with you. I promise we'll celebrate it next year."

I checked his story on Facebook.

His recent story featured a greeting card, and I recognized the handwriting at first glance.

"Cheers to another year with you. May good health and happiness always be with you."

Salome's handwriting spoke for her character—neat and elegant.

I had begged her more than once to write my name as a keepsake, yet she turned me down.

"Elliot, I would rather not waste my time on trivial matters."

But now, she poured her heart out and wrote a warm wish on the greeting card. Every single word was devoted to Malcolm.

My finger hovered over the screen before I steeled my mind and dialed his number. On the other end of the street, his expression visibly panicked.

Amidst the celebrating crowd, he attempted to keep a cool composure.

"What is it, Elliot? Why are you calling at this hour?"

I skipped pleasantries and cut to the chase. "Where are you?"

He was momentarily taken aback before letting out a casual chuckle.

"I'm on a date. What's the matter? Shouldn't you be celebrating New Year with your girlfriend? Don't worry. I'll give her an earful when I see her next time."

"Turn around," I simply ordered and hung up.

Not far away, both of them stiffened. Their faces went pale when they recognized me.

I pushed past the crowd to approach them.

They unceremoniously unclasped their intertwined fingers. Their cheeks were red with embarrassment of being caught red-handed.

"Elliot, what are you doing here?" Malcolm asked, unable to look me in the eyes.

Noticing my unzipped jacket, Salome furrowed her brows. "Why are you following us?"

She instinctively stepped forward to pull up my jacket's zipper.

A familiar minty scent hit me.

It used to comfort me, but now I found it intolerable.

I took a step back, leaving her extended hand freezing in the air.

Suppressing the tremor in my voice, I demanded an explanation. "Care to explain what's happening between the two of you?"

Malcolm involuntarily looked away, visibly guilty. "Elliot, it's not what you think. It's just that I'm tired of people trying to set me up with other girls, so I asked Salome to pretend to be my girlfriend. We didn't mean to keep it a secret."

I tasted bile on my tongue.

I had known Salome since childhood, and Malcolm was my best friend for ten years.

Yet, both of them readily isolated me.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed.

The ride I had hailed earlier had arrived at the pickup location, and the driver was urging me to get in the car.

I gave them a pained look.

"You have been together behind my back, yet you kept it a secret from me for three years."

Salome's frown deepened.

"Elliot, your accusation is uncalled for. I feel insulted."

Although they claimed they couldn't stand each other, they rushed to defend each other and made me the outsider.

My past efforts to smooth their relationships were in vain.

A breeze brushed past us. The small bells on their wrists jingled melodiously.

Usually, I would indignantly argue with Salome.

But now, I noticed their matching bracelets. I realized there was nothing to fight for. I exhaled deeply and announced, "Let's break up, Salome."

Salome began to visit the shop frequently. On the first day, I threw the pot of orchids she brought into the bin without hesitation. On the second day, she waited outside the flower shop until closing time.On the third day, she showed me the sets of spare keys she somehow managed to retrieve."Elliot, I bought the apartment. You can move back whenever you want…"I simply walked away from her without stopping.…On the sixth day, I spotted two familiar faces by the roadside.Malcolm had returned to our hometown as well. He was having a fight with Salome. He usually cared about his appearance, but on that day, I found a disheveled man before me. His hair was messily draped over his face."Get away from me, you psychopath… If I'm mad, it's your fault for driving me mad back then!"I recoiled from disgust. I turned on my heel to take a detour, but someone called out, "Elliot."I turned to look at the speaker. It was Malcolm. His calm eyes were brimming with fathomless sorro

  • Walking Away on Our Tenth Anniversary   Chapter 7 A Fresh Start

In my third month back in my hometown, I settled down at a flower shop.I lived a leisurely life, leaving my past in the city. It was entertaining tending to various flowers in the shop daily. Many customers praised my work."It's beautiful. I'm definitely coming back next time."Nobody would call me stupid or too dense.I didn't yearn for the fast-paced city life, nor did I dwell on Salome and Malcolm's catchphrase.…"Just sit back and relax, Elliot. We've got everything covered."It turned out my life was easier when I was finally in my element. It took me almost thirty years to learn this. Fortunately, it was never too late.Someone entered the shop. The wind chime hanging on the door chimed melodiously as the door was pushed open.A gentle voice reached my ears. "A bouquet of ice-blue roses, thanks."I hummed in response and looked up to greet the customer."It's great to see you again, Ms. Ashford."A smile curled Selene's lips as she nodded gently.Over the past th

Salome was momentarily at a loss for words. She unlocked her phone and found a new trending topic on social media. The wave caused by her relationship announcement hadn't even calmed, yet an unexpected plot twist had already taken over the internet.Elliot shared evidence of their decade-long love relationship online—photos of their holding hands, her affectionate audio message, and their love tokens, which were inscribed with their names.Every single piece of evidence overthrew her lies.Their mutual friends, mostly their high school classmates, shared Elliot's post."Back in high school, I always saw them holding hands. They have been together for ten years. I have no idea how the real boyfriend turned into a secret lover."Someone in the private room played the audio attached to the post.It sounded as though it had been exported from surveillance footage, but she wouldn't mistake Malcolm's voice for someone else's.When she heard Malcolm asking Elliot to do him one last f

At dawn, Salome applied her makeup in front of a full-length mirror. There were no new messages on her phone.Usually at this point, Elliot would've long since begged for her forgiveness via audio messages."I'm sorry, Princess."Yet this time, there wasn't a single message from him.The strange feeling hovered above her head.Meanwhile, Malcolm made an omelette and slid it onto her plate. Her cutlery scraped against the plate as she started eating breakfast.Startled, he glanced at her. "What's wrong, Salome?"She whispered, "Has Elliot contacted you?"He was taken aback for a second. He eventually shook his head and offered her a reassuring smile."Don't worry about him. You know Elliot. He won't hold grudges against us. Besides, the three of us have been spending time together for a decade. He can never bring himself to cut ties with us."His comfort sounded plausible, which fueled her confidence. After all, they both knew Elliot could never stay mad at her.Still, an u

Soaking in the rain the day before resulted in an unexpectedly high fever.I lay on the bed and held up the thermometer to check it.My body temperature had reached 103°F, and my head was spinning.…Before I could order a ride to the hospital, I heard a noise in the living room.I rushed out of the bedroom and was met with Salome's reddened eyes. She was glaring at me while holding Malcolm's hand. She slammed her phone on the coffee table with a loud thud and faced me with a darkened expression. "Look at what you've done, Elliot."She stopped closer to me and confronted me.I stared at her blankly. My mind was still processing her accusation when her malicious words reached my ears."Yesterday was an exception. Just because we left you to hail a ride on your own, you let jealousy blind your reason? Can't you just admit that Malcolm is better than you? Do you have to ruin his future?"The weight of her words crushed me.I snapped out of my stupor and found a post written fro

The landlord called to remind me of my upcoming rent."Elliot, it's almost time to pay up. Let me know by next Wednesday whether you're renewing the lease or not."I hummed in acknowledgement. After sitting in silence for a while, I began to pack my things, including the game console I bought for Malcolm, the pot of orchids for Salome, and the trinkets that reminded me of all the good times.I always bought things in three sets.Even the apartment I rented featured three bedrooms and a living room.I also prepared two sets of keys for them. The apartment was a sanctuary for me in the busy and fast-paced city life. But now, I found myself hesitating over whether to renew the lease.Salome and Malcolm didn't reach out to me the entire night, yet they updated their Facebook stories nonstop.…The next day was my day off.
