Chapter 4

Penulis: Stars
Gavin and I wrapped up the divorce quickly, but the moment I returned home, a cold jolt shot through me.

Where our wedding photo used to sit, proud and centered in the living room, there was now a photo of Gavin and Natasha. In it, they were all over each other like they'd been together forever.

Even the bedroom wasn't mine anymore. Her stuff was everywhere, spilling across every surface, while my clothes and makeup had been tossed into a corner like they didn't matter.

Natasha leaned against the doorframe, her voice thick with venom. "Rhea, you and Gavin are divorced. This isn't your home anymore, so pack your crap and get out."

Gavin backed her up. "She's right. You don't belong here anymore. This is my house now—mine and my wife's."

He was kicking me out so that Natasha could step in and take my place as his lawful wife.

I gave a nod. "Fine. I'll go."

I pulled out my suitcase and started folding my clothes, one piece at a time.

Gavin clearly hadn't expected me to leave. Panic flashed across his face as he pointed to a photo tucked in the corner.

"Wait, is that you in this photo? Why would I have a photo with you?"

I didn't miss a beat. "That was from a college volunteer trip. I was visiting psychiatric patients."

The jab landed hard. Rage twisted his face as he grabbed my suitcase and hurled it out the door with a crash.

"You wanna leave? Then get the hell out!"

The door slammed behind me, hard enough to rattle the walls.

I picked up my clothes in silence, packed them into my suitcase, and walked away without so much as a glance back.

After I'd gone a good distance, Natasha put on a show, forcing out a few crocodile tears as she cooed, "Gav, I never thought Rhea would actually blow up like that. This is all my fault. If I hadn't pulled you away from her, she wouldn't be this jealous. Maybe I should go apologize properly?"

Gavin's brows furrowed, but the moment he heard her speak, he rushed to comfort her. "Don't blame yourself. This is on Rhea. She's being ridiculously petty. I told you you'd be Mrs. Chapman for a whole seven days, and I meant it. Once we chalk it up to my 'memory loss' and I smooth things over with her, she'll come crawling back."

Gavin had it all wrong. This time, when we went our separate ways, there was no going back.

After I left, Chapman Pharmaceuticals's experimental project crumbled just as I had expected. Progress came to a grinding halt.

My old lab colleagues kept calling, one after another, all begging me to return and pick things up where I left off. Then one day, Peter Dunaway called.

"Rhea, you've got to come back. We can't even carry out the final experimental step without you," he said.

I was just about to turn him down when I heard a commotion in the background. Natasha had snatched the phone.

Her voice crackled with anger. "Rhea, have you no shame? The company fired you. Why are you still clinging to my experimental project?"

Peter snapped, "Your project? Rhea built this from scratch, Natasha! We're calling her because we're stuck. If this drug batch fails, do you have any idea what's at stake? This isn't just about money."

Natasha didn't even flinch. "What's the big deal? I'll take over her experimental project and get it finished in no time."

He stared in disbelief. "Are you serious? Only Rhea knows how to run that experiment. If you screw this up, people could die!"

Natasha spat, "Gavin has lost his memory, so I'm in charge now. And if any of you dare question me again, don't be surprised if you're next to get fired."

The line went dead.

The outcome was completely predictable.

Chapman Pharmaceuticals had no further dealings with me. And if giving up one of my experimental projects meant never having to put up with Gavin and Natasha again, then it was a price I'd gladly pay.

The online backlash was getting uglier by the day. Some clueless people attacked me for being Chapman Pharmaceutical's former vice president, and before long, the criticism turned into full-blown personal attacks.I never wanted anything to do with Chapman Pharmaceuticals, but now that it was bleeding into my everyday life, I wasn't about to sit back and take it.I was determined to set the record straight, so I called for a press conference. Standing in front of a sea of cameras, I made it clear I had parted ways with Chapman Pharmaceuticals a long time ago.I firmly stated I had nothing to do with the drug's experimental process and urged the media to stop the harassment once and for all.The press conference was in full swing when Natasha suddenly charged onto the stage, screaming at me in front of everyone."Rhea, you're unbelievable! The second the company's in trouble, you bail. Meanwhile, Gavin's the one facing fines and prison time! You always said you loved him, but the m

News of Chapman Pharmaceuticals' defective drugs spread like wildfire.Inspections by the authorities revealed that the company's latest batch of products was completely counterfeit and dangerously substandard, prompting an immediate shutdown. But the fallout didn't stop there. After three days of police interrogation, Gavin was released, only to find himself face-to-face with furious relatives of the victims demanding compensation. Some even pried open Gavin's front door, stormed inside, smashed everything in sight, and swore they'd make him pay with his life. Now drowning in debt and hunted by grieving families, Gavin lived each day under the shadow of death.…Not long after leaving Chapman Pharmaceuticals, I got an offer from a well-known overseas pharmaceutical company, complete with promises of state-of-the-art lab equipment. Gavin's smile faltered."Come on, I was joking," he said quickly. "You're really going to take it that seriously? I'll make Natasha apologize. Then, we can just move on."Natasha shot back instantly, "Why should I apologize? No way."His voice dropped, laced with warning. "Don't forget who's paying your bills. If the company goes under, that little villa of yours out in the suburbs goes with it."With money hanging over her head, Natasha muttered reluctantly, "Fine. I'm sorry. Hurry up and give Gav's statement to the authorities. I've got a hair appointment after this wedding shoot."Gavin had been incredibly generous with her. He even bought her a damn villa.I still remembered how, right after we graduated, our landlord kicked us out for missing the rent. I had a fever and suggested we crash at a hotel for the night, using my own money. But he snapped at me for being "wasteful"."Your money is my money. And you want to blow it on a hotel? Since when did you become so materiali

Gavin froze for a second. "No, this can't be right. There must be some misunderstanding."But the line went dead before he could say another word.He knew nothing about pharmaceutical experiments. Every single drug under development at Chapman Pharmaceuticals, big or small, had been under my control. Now, with the crisis crashing down around him, Gavin wheeled on Natasha. "What's going on? Weren't you supposed to be on top of this?"Natasha still didn't grasp the gravity of the situation. She just shrugged, completely unfazed."How could they do this to us? That research was all my work. But whatever, we'll just pay the fine and move on."Gavin's face flushed with anger. "You seriously don't get it, do you? This isn't just about a fine. The company could be shut down. We could end up in prison!"Natasha still didn't get it. She mumbled, almost to herself, "It's not a big deal. The original ingredients were too expensive, so I just used cheaper ones. I saved the company a ton of m

The past few days had been blissfully carefree—just good food, plenty of drinks, and traveling with my closest friends. On the seventh day after leaving Chapman Pharmaceuticals, I headed to the beach, hoping to unwind and clear my head. But as I strolled along the shore, I spotted two painfully familiar figures up ahead.Natasha, in a pristine white wedding gown, clung to Gavin as they posed for a series of romantic wedding shots.I scowled. Of all the people to run into on my one perfect getaway, it had to be them.Just as I turned to walk away, I heard Natasha calling out behind me, "Hey, you! Perfect timing. Come hold my gown for me."I kept walking, pretending I didn't hear a thing."I'm talking to you! Are you deaf?" she shouted, louder this time.I turned around.Natasha gasped, all fake surprise. "Oh my God. Rhea? Seriously? Don't tell me you're here to crash the wedding? I get it, you're obsessed with Gav, but do you really have to ruin our big day?"Gavin stepped in f
