Amelia’s POV)

It had been days since the scare. I was still under Ethan’s orders to “rest,” which sounded nicer than “sit still and do nothing.” He kept fussing over me, bringing water, piling pillows under my back, making sure I didn’t move too quickly. Sweet at first. Smothering after three days.

By the fourth night, something shifted.

He still kissed me goodnight, but it was quick, distracted. He rolled onto his side with his back to me. No warmth. No reaching for my hand.

“Goodnight,” he muttered.

“Goodnight,” I whispered, staring at the ceiling.

But I didn’t sleep. I listened to his steady breathing, like he was already far away.

The next morning, I padded into the kitchen. He was buttoning his shirt, tie hanging loose. His coffee sat untouched.

“You’re quiet,” I said.

“Just tired.”

I walked closer. “Ethan, don’t do this.”

He looked up. “Do what?”

“Shut me out.”

“I’m not shutting you out.” He grabbed his tie, knotted it quickly.

“You haven’t touched me in days,” I said softly.

Amelia’s POVI couldn’t sit still. The note lay on the coffee table, those words burning into me: Ask him about the second body.I pressed a hand to my stomach, the baby, my heart racing so hard it almost hurt. I couldn’t wait for Ethan to come home. Not after this.I grabbed my coat, stuffed the note in my pocket, and headed straight for the car.****Sterling Tower’s glass doors slid open, cool air rushing over me. The lobby buzzed with people moving in and out, the sound of clicking heels and phones ringing.I walked straight to the reception desk. “I need to see Ethan Blackwood.”The young man behind the counter glanced up from his screen. “Do you have an appointment, ma’am?”“I’m his wife.”That made him pause. “Mr. Ethan is in a meeting.”“I’ll wait.”His polite smile didn’t shift. “It may be a while.”“I said I’ll wait.” My voice came sharper than I meant. He nodded. “Of course, ma’am.”I turned and found a chair in the waiting area, my knee bouncing uncontrollably. I pulled ou

  • While Marrying Mr. Steele   Chapter 178 – Ryan’s Leverage

Ryan’s POVThe mini bar in the house was empty except for the two of us. Veronica liked it that way.The house was her domain, her rules. She sat in the corner booth, swirling a glass of red like it was an extension of her hand. Always polished, always in control. Or at least she liked to think so.So here I was, standing in the doorway, the smell of her perfume already thick in the air. She lounged on the white leather couch like she owned the world, a half-empty glass of wine resting by her side.“Ryan,” she said smoothly, “you kept me waiting.”I smirked. “You didn’t have anywhere else to be.”Her eyes narrowed. “Still as rude as ever. Sit down.”I walked in but didn’t sit. I leaned against the wall instead, arms crossed. “You wanted to see me. Talk.”She tilted her head, studying me the way she always did, like I was something she could dissect and put back together. “You’ve been… busy lately. Where have you been? You came late yesterday and now today. Are you cheating on me?”I s

Amelia’s POVThe apartment door clicked shut behind Ryan, and the silence that followed felt heavier than any noise could’ve been. Ethan hadn’t moved. He stood there with his fists still balled, staring at the door like he could burn a hole through it.I broke it.“What did he mean?” My voice came out sharper than I intended. “Ethan—what happened after I left the docks?”He turned, jaw tight. “Don’t listen to him. He’s trying to stir things up.”“That’s not an answer.” I crossed my arms, feeling the tremor in my chest. “Did you do something?”He dragged a hand over his face. “Amelia, come on. Not now.”“Yes, now.” I stood, stepping closer. “He knew something. He wasn’t bluffing. What is he talking about?”Ethan shook his head. “Ryan thrives on chaos. He twists words, makes you doubt everything. Don’t give him that power.”I didn’t back down. “I’m not giving him power. I’m asking my fiancé what he’s hiding from me.”His eyes softened for a second, then darted away. “It doesn’t matter.”

  • While Marrying Mr. Steele   Chapter 176: The wrong person knows

Ethan’s POVBy the time I made it back to the penthouse, I smelled like stale coffee and printer ink. Another day wasted in meetings that solved nothing.I expected Amelia to be curled up in bed. Instead, she was in the kitchen wearing one of my shirts, sleeves rolled up past her elbows, humming while she stirred something on the stove. The knot in my shoulders loosened instantly. “Domestic goddess?” I asked, dropping my briefcase by the door. She turned, spoon in hand. “Don’t sound so shocked. Pregnant women still cook.”I walked over, kissed the top of her head, and peeked in the pan. “That’s not cooking, that’s bribery. You’re trying to keep me from ordering takeout again.”The penthouse smelled like garlic and butter. Amelia had insisted on cooking, even though I told her I’d bring takeout.“Sit down,” she said, waving me toward the couch as she pulled a pan off the stove. “You look dead on your feet.”“I’ve been worse,” I said, loosening my tie.She shot me a look. “You’re not im

  • While Marrying Mr. Steele   Chapter 175: she wasn't happy

Ethan’s POVThe ceiling groaned again. A long, tired moan of metal above us, like it was deciding whether to hold or not. Dust drifted onto the marble floor, thin streaks across Sienna’s black dress. She brushed it off and smirked. “Well… if this is it, at least I’m dying pretty.”“Not funny,” I muttered, keeping my eyes on the loose panel above.“You’re right,” she said, stretching her legs out in front of her like she owned the place. “We should talk about serious things. Like how you keep pretending you don’t want me.”I turned to her, incredulous. “Are you seriously doing this right now?”“What? We’re stuck. No phones, no door, no one coming anytime soon.” She tilted her head. “Might as well use the time.”“We’re not using it for that.”She leaned closer, lowering her voice. “Ethan, come on. We’ve always had this pull. Don’t tell me you don’t feel it.”I scoffed. “What I feel is regret every time I have to stand in the same room as you.”“Ouch.” She clutched her chest like I’d st
