A moment later, she heard a car door slam. Tyler was back in record time. She breezed past Luc, headed for the restaurant’s front door.He grabbed her by the arm and pulled her close. “Where are you going?”She jerked free and lunged for the door. Luc didn’t want her . . . but he didn’t want anyone else to have her. Alyssa refused to play that game. Hopefully, dishing back some of his own medicine would put some distance between them.Smiling tightly, she quipped, “Maybe it is time I let someone else scratch me.”THE mock dinner service was winding to a merciful end. The evening had been flawless. The muggy afternoon had given way to a cooler evening, and Alyssa had thrown open the doors to the patio, bringing the outside in. The food had been impeccable, the help she’d hired perfect. Not a hint of an undercooked steak or overcooked vegetables. The waitstaff had been deferential and efficient. Patrons all around smiled—and Bonheur had secured lots of future reservations.Professionall

Problem was, he actually liked Alyssa. As a woman. As a person. And whatever they had, it wasn’t just sex.Worse, last night, he’d gotten this odd pleasure in taking care of her. She worked so damn hard, fulfilling the needs of her businesses and her employees before seeing to her own.Once he was gone, who would take care of her?Tyler.God, even the man’s name burned like acid in his gut. He squeezed his eyes shut. Why the hell should he be so jealous of another man when he was the one lying naked beside her?Because it’s not going to last.Shoving the ugly thought away, he propped himself up and looked at Alyssa’s clock. Ten eighteen. Wow, they’d both been exhausted, sleeping a good nine hours plus.Suddenly, she rolled over slowly and opened her eyes. Her lashes batted slumberously, her makeup smudged beneath her eyes. Rather than resembling a raccoon, she looked vulnerable.Once she saw him, Alyssa glanced away, vague panic on her face. “What happened?”Damn it, she was pulling a

“I’ll do it.” Luc’s offer was more like a demand. “Stay here and call Remy.”“They’re my guests!”“They ate my food. I’m not playing at semantics when your safety is on the line.” Then he turned to Tyler and threw a mean glare the bouncer’s way. “Keep her here and guard her. I swear to God if you ruffle a hair on her head, I will split your skull in two and flambé your brain while your heart is still beating.”Tyler grunted. “Notice how none of this shit happened to Alyssa until you showed up? Everything was fairly peaceful before you leapt into her life and fucked it all up.”“You get too jealous? Can’t stand to see me with her?” Luc challenged.Oh, dear God. “Can you two refrain from beating the crap out of each other for the next ten minutes? Let’s get the doors closed and locked. When the parking lot is empty, you can go out there and have your pissing match.”Luc’s gaze touched her; then he glared darkly at Tyler. “I’ll be back.”When he’d gone, Tyler’s disapproval reverberated t

“That’s not true. You make me feel things for you that I . . .”He raked his hands through his hair, looking for words. Excuses, she thought. No more.“Can it. I don’t fucking care. I’ll have Sadie bring me home around four. You’d better not be there. Since Bonheur and Sexy Sirens are both closed on Sundays, don’t make me lay eyes on you until Monday’s dinner service. Even then? Don’t talk to me. And don’t ever touch me again.”Luc didn’t say a word as she disappeared into the bathroom. His silence broke her heart all over again. Tears stung her eyes like acid drops. She knew what she’d said, but a part of her wished he cared enough to fight for her. Apparently not. Ridiculous, wishful thinking. She’d learned fairy tales were shit at fifteen. How had she forgotten that valuable lesson? After cleaning up, she dragged on a new thong and brushed her hair, marveling at the flushed, swollen-lipped woman in the mirror. She’d finally fallen in love for the first time in her life. What a mise

Luc laughed bitterly. “No. I’m the last thing she needs.” He spotted Kimber’s brother returning with a tray filled with coffees. “Ask him. He’ll tell you.”Clapping his cousin on the back, Luc turned and spotted a triage nurse leaving her post to help a woman in labor. He sneaked in the door just before it closed, then wandered down the hall. Temporary rooms were set up in a circle all around the nurses’ station. A whiteboard in the middle of the room listed all the patients and their room numbers. Finding Alyssa’s room in the corner was easy enough. So was ducking in.Inside, the thin drape had been drawn. He could see her outline, but nothing more. She didn’t want to see him, and he respected that, so he didn’t tear it away, as he yearned to. Damn hard. Luc wanted to see for himself that she was okay, unharmed. But she’d made her wishes clear. Now would be his only chance to say good-bye.Behind the drape, he heard the beep of monitors, the pump of oxygen into her system. An IV stan
