???'s POV Dimitri tilted his head upwards, staring intensely at the tree. "Because this is not a tree." Carson laughed, "What you mean this ain't a tree," he wrapped his legs and arms around the tree trunk in an attempt to climb it. The tree started to ooze a gooey substance, sticking Carson to its body. "Carson, get the fuck down and come over here," Zander implored. "Alpha, I'm trying, but I can't," Carson whined as his body wiggled trying to get free, but it was like his body was superglued to the tree. Dimitri stepped towards Carson slowly, and he tried to yank Carson away, he was almost successful but then a branch-like arm wrapped around his body, lifting him towards the tree's face. He whimpered as the branch tightened around his torso. Dimitri froze when the eyes shot open, unearthing yellow snake eyes. The pupils narrowed into slits and a long serpent's tongue stretched out and licked the side of Dimitri's face. "A vampire in my midst," the tree spoke. "Why have you

???'s POV "Zander," Hazel barely whispered as she felt his left arm tighten around her waist. He had his eyes closed, grinding his teeth while he folded his right palm into a fist. She saw flashes of his parent's death, but she couldn't detect any guilt from him. Something wasn't right. She felt his confusion, but he didn't respond. He had a weary look on his face. "Alpha, they're closing in," Declan recited. He pressed his back up against James' who still had an unconscious Julia in his arms. Isis was busy chanting and humming in the centre while Dimitri and Carson guarded her sides. "Hurry up, old crone," Dimitri ordered as the apparitions drew closer. "Shut up and let her do her thing," Carson growled. "Just make sure they don't touch her." Isis' body began to convulse. The spirits drew closer. It was taking all their might to stay afloat, huddled in the one spot. "It's not working," Isis finally let out. "Then try again," Carson told her. "Just try it again!" "A

???'s POV "Can you stand?" Hazel placed a hand on her aunt's shoulder. "Yes," she sighed. James gently placed her on her feet. She wobbled a bit, but she quickly regained her composure. "Easy." "Yeah, Aunt Jules. You gave us quite the scare." Hazel hugged her. "I assure you I'm alright, sweet pea," Julia smiled. Her smile melted away as she took in her surroundings. She felt a rush of excitement and contentment. She gently grabbed Hazel by her shoulders and pushed her away. "Aunt Jules?" Hazel was surprised by her actions. A burst of joy and a strong feeling of togetherness overflowed in her heart. She fell to her knees. "I know what to do," she said. "Julia, wait!" Dimitri called, but she crawled until she found the hand of a corpse. The moss infested hand was just protruding from the soil. All the fingers were bent in a fist, except for the middle one. Julia pulled on it until she heard the dried up bone crack. The others waited for shit to hit the fan. "Wait, why

CARSON'S POV "Listen mutt," Dimitri spoke through gritted teeth. His eyes were swirls of a rich colour red. His fangs were coated in venom as he sank his claws in my jaw. "You do not speak my mate's name - you hear me?" He roared. I guess he still hadn't forgiven me for taking Zoey's virginity. Jinx and I let it slide. I nudged him off me. "Guys!" We were disturbed by Declan being dragged off by the twin clowns. They were taking him over to the food cart. They seemed harmless enough. They just wanted him to try their treats. "No worries Declan. This is your chance," Dimitri smiled at him. "Ok Vampire. What are you up to?" "You know Carson, sometimes I wonder why your Alpha is always such a stick in the mud - but every day I realise it's because you are such a fuck-up, so he has to keep grounded at all times. He always has to be the responsible one." "Yeah, so? He's the Alpha - with great power comes great responsibility. I'm the Beta - I'm not supposed to be responsible unless

DECLAN'S POV The loose gravel crunched beneath my boots as I shifted my weight on my feet, cementing them to the ground as I prepared myself to fight if need be. It was inches away now, it bowed its head and stretched a skinless arm in my direction for me to shake. I was hesitant at first but I took his hand anyway. "I'm Major Skully." He had impossibly enormous hands - his over-enthusiastic handshake could snap a human's wrist right off. His tight grip shattered the bones in my wrist. I didn't flinch, I refused to show weakness. I pulled my hand away without making a sound. Good thing I had supernatural healing. "I'm Declan and these things on my shoulders are my friends, Dimitri and Carson," I introduced us. 'Wait! Didn't Alpha and the others leave to go see Major Skully?' Maddox questioned. 'Yes, so it's either this thing is lying about who he is or Alpha is being led into a trap.' "Are you the leader of this town?" I asked. "I was until I got overthrown." "By who?"
