Eden's POV“Being with me is dangerous,” Zane confided. “There’s always the risk of…of being killed if my wolf gets out of control.”My heart hurt for Zane in a way it never had before. This was a heavy burden to bear. The curse. Thinking he could never have children. Knowing that his bloodline would die with him. And his wolf? I didn’t have a wolf so I had no idea what it felt like to have one that was unhinged. But I’d seen his wolf. I saw the look into its eyes. It had shaken me to my core.“Mate. Luna. Queen. Those are just words, Eden,” Zane continued. “They mean nothing to me. I thought…I thought I was destined to be alone until I died. I’d resigned myself to it. But then you…”He gripped my hand tightly. “You changed everything. You reignited that spark in me. That desire to live, to really live. And to love.”I squeezed his hand back. My poor Zane. What a weight to carry. No wonder things had felt so complicated! They are! But knowing what I now knew, I felt like maybe there w

Eden's POVZane was true to his word. He settled into the Silvermist Pack, ready to stay as long as it took to win my grandfather’s approval. I was very grateful for this. I wanted my grandfather’s blessing and Zane was determined to get it.Zane called a meeting with my grandfather and other members of our council. I was allowed to attend. I didn’t know what the meeting was about, but I had the sinking suspicion it had something to do with Astrid and whatever was happening up north. Zane had been mindlinking her a lot.Zane addressed the council and explained that there were mysterious deaths happening, not just here at our pack borders, but in other packs as well. With our Gamma, Storm, being detained, we need extra protection. So Zane offered up his warriors to patrol our borders. This pleased my grandfather, although he didn’t openly admit it. He agreed to Zane’s offer. Zane flashed me a smile. It was the first step in winning over my grandfather.I wanted to ask Zane more about t

Eden's POV“Well, I won’t be sad then,” I chuckled. “Wouldn’t want you to get jealous.”He was teasing me. I could tell by his tone. He wasn’t actually jealous of the letter from Adrian. He wasn’t jealous of Adrian at all! Not anymore. This was progress, I told myself. Zane and I were at a place now where we could tease each other, could laugh at his overzealous past behaviour.Zane squeezed his arms around me. I was amused by his comment.“What did the letter say?” Zane asked. His breath was hot on my ear.“That he’s okay. And that’s he’s sorry.”“Under different circumstances, I might have liked Adrian,” Zane said pensively.“Perhaps,” I shrugged. It didn’t matter. Adrian was gone and I was with Zane.“So, about last night,” he whispered in my ear. “I woke up with your taste still on my tongue.”Jesus.He was talking dirty. Right here. In the middle of this park. And I was loving every minute of it.“Is that so?” I asked. He leaned in and nibbled on my ear.“I could taste you fore

Eden's POV“Poisoning?” Zane asked. All eyes turned to Zane. What was Astrid saying? Was there a conspiracy here? Was someone trying to kill the werewolves?Zane paused for a beat. “Do you think it’s witches?” he asked. “Witches are very skilled with poisons. They know how to use poisons to suppress werewolves.”I balked. Witches? I knew how Zane felt about witches, given the fact that it was a witch who had cursed his family blood line in the past. Historically, Lycans and witches had never seen eye to eye. Was he just blaming witches because he didn’t like them? But my grandfather spoke up.“That is true, King Zane,” Alpha Miles said. “Witches are known to possess and use great poisons. Poisons that we don’t fully understand. And if poison really is the cause of all these mysterious deaths, then witches could very well be the culprit.”“Those were my initial thoughts,” Astrid offered. She was still standing in that very strange pose. I studied her face. It was her eyes, I realized.

Eden's POVI was determined to have an open, honest conversation with Astrid. She was being so cold to me, so stand-offish, but I didn’t know why. So after dinner, I tracked her down. She was sitting alone on a bench in the grassy area right outside the dining hall.“Astrid,” I said, smiling warmly. “There you are. I’ve been looking all over for you.”She raised an eyebrow but didn’t respond.I held out my arms to embrace her, as we usually did. But she didn’t stand. She just remained sitting. I awkwardly withdrew my arms. Her coldness stung. I didn’t get it. It was like she’d just switched off our friendship switch without even a second thought.“Can I….can I talk to you about something?” I started, my voice a bit shaky.“Now’s not a good time,” she said, rolling her eyes.“It won’t take long, I promise,” I replied.“I don’t have time for talks,” she snapped, standing up. “I have a lot of work to do. You know, Gamma stuff.”And before I could even reply, she brushed right by me, clip
