The drive to the Administration block was the most awkward thing Ava had ever lived through. And that included that one time in high school when a bunch of wolves had taken her clothes and all the towels in the locker room while she had been showering after gym class. Not a single person had come to her aid when she’d shouted for what felt like hours, including the teachers with their super-sensitive hearing. She’d had to wait until after lessons, when she had assumed the students had gone home, to try to find something to wear in one of the classrooms. Only the school hadn’t been quite as empty as she’d thought. She’d barely snuck out of the locker room when the students had filed out of the classrooms. Dozens of them laughing at her as she stood naked in the hallway. Nudity meant nothing to them, but because she always hid her body, they used that to bully her.She had all her bits hanging out and had been laughed at for weeks, but that embarrassment was nothing compared to sitting

“Yes, Mr Michelson. So please sit down, and let’s talk about Ava.”Ava stopped inspecting Zeke’s throat to look at Mr Patrick. Why did he make that sound so ominous, as if he thought something was wrong with her?“The day is almost over. We need to talk about the Head of Council and what he wants,” Ava insisted as she went to take the seat next to her father in front of Mr Patrick’s desk. “The longer I watch you, Ava, the more I’m convinced I know what they want,” Mr Patrick said. Zeke sat beside her, meeting her gaze curiously before they both turned to the professor.“And that is?” she asked.“The purpose of this school isn’t just to keep people in line and equip the future leaders with the skills to lead,” Mr Patrick said. “They also root out their future assets and their future threats.”“And what does any of that have to do with me?” she asked in exasperation.“Shall I make a list?” Mr Patrick said. “You’ve made several trips to the infirmary where they never found any injuries

Zeke watched his mate sleep, but she was still troubled. He couldn't just see it on her face; he could feel it. Had she really thought he had hurt Claire that day? From his conversation with the Omega after he'd cornered her in training, he had known Ava had been involved somehow. He just hadn't expected this. His mate wasn't a human. Yet she still smelled human even now, despite her stronger scent and his scent on her. A repressed wolf? Had trauma caused that?Shadow had emerged early, too. He'd been in danger, and the shift had shocked everyone. But Shadow hadn't retreated after what he had done. He'd revelled in the destruction and had wanted to do it again and again. It was why he'd had to put the mental wall between them—the reason he'd learned how to control and hide his true nature. He would teach Ava to do the same if she had to, even though Shadow growled his objection. He could understand where his beast was coming from. It had been more challenging to function when th

Blood. Screams. Crunching sounds. Blood. Screams. Crunching sounds. Claws. Claire. Her friends. So much blood. Ava woke up with a jolt and immediately felt her stomach churning. With her heart still pounding, she pushed the bedding off her body and rushed to the adjoining bathroom. The moment her stomach was empty, the overwhelming guilt took her over again. She had to make amends. Those poor families were grieving because of her. If it was true that she had a wolf, what sort of wolf did that? What kind of monster would cause that horror she saw every night in her nightmares? It was the sort of wolf that the Council put down. She'd heard the stories. Wolves that were uncontrollable just disappeared. It was for the best for the people around them. And now she was one of those uncontrollable wolves. From wolfless to a monster in one afternoon. The Council could have her. It was probably why they wanted her in the first place. They had seen it somehow. They had seen all that darkne

"You can't hand yourself over, Ava," Mr Patrick said quietly. Ava opened her eyes and looked at the professor who'd sat in front of her on the floor the moment her father had gone to help Zeke clear his head. "You really need to stop doing that," she sighed. "I can't help you if you remain so closed off. I have to do it.""That's what this is about, isn't it?" She frowned in irritation. "This isn't about meditating; it's about you having free access to my thoughts.""Something is blocking you from your wolf, probably something to do with the trauma of your first shift. If you don't let me do this, you'll need a lot longer than this week to figure it out," Mr Patrick said, without even an ounce of remorse. "You don't have time to mess around, Ava."He had no right to look into her head! She couldn't hide her anger as she stood and walked out of the living room. She didn't know how she was feeling, and Mr. Patrick was sorting through that mess in her head anyway. Without another tho
