Aria POVI put my ear on Dad's office door. I had to hear what they were saying. Ethan and Cade were talking with Dad, and I heard words like "royal castle" and "King's Council."My heart started beating really fast. Were they talking about the Royal Competition? The one everyone always talked about?"We leave next week," Dad said. "This is our chance to get real influence with the king.”"We won't mess up, Father," Ethan said. He sounded so sure of himself.Next week. They were going next week, and nobody told me.I moved back from the door and knocked loud."Come in," Dad called out in his rough voice.I opened the door and walked in. My boots made noise on the wood floor. Dad sat behind his big desk with some fancy paper that had the royal mark on it. Ethan and Cade stood next to him, looking happy."Aria," Dad said. He didn't even look at me. "What do you want?""I heard you guys talking about the royal castle. Are you going to the Royal Competition?"Ethan gave me a mean look. "

Aria POVI barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I could feel their hands on me, smell their scent, hear their voices telling me to forget. But how could I forget something that felt so right before it went so wrong? When morning came, I splashed cold water on my face and looked in the mirror. My blue eyes were red from not sleeping, and my skin was pale. I looked like exactly what I was—a girl who got her heart broken by two kings who didn't want her.But I couldn't let anyone see that. Especially not Dad. He was already waiting for me to fail.I put on my training clothes and tied my hair back. If I was going to prove myself, I needed to focus on the competition, not on green eyes and storm-blue ones that haunted my dreams. The training grounds were behind the castle, with different areas for different kinds of fighting. I found the sword practice area and saw a young girl there, holding a sword that looked too big for her."You must be Aria," she said, turning around. It was W

Aria POV"Where is everyone?"I stood in the empty hallway, my voice bouncing off the stone walls. Three days. It had been three days since the kings came to my room, since they touched me like I was everything and then told me to forget it all happened.Three days of nothing.I walked through the castle like a ghost. Nobody saw me. Nobody needed me. Everyone else had somewhere to be, something important to do.Luna spent her mornings with the Ravencrest witches now. They were teaching her about herbs and healing potions, and she came back to her room each night smelling like lavender and strange smoke, her eyes bright with excitement."It's amazing, Aria," she'd told me last night. "Willow says I have a natural gift for it. Can you believe that? Me, working with witches!"I was happy for her. I really was. But watching her find her place here just made me feel more lost.Ethan and Cade were busy too. They spent their days with Blake, working on competition strategies and studying the

Aria POV "So, Aria Blackwood." Vivian's voice dripped with fake sweetness. Like honey that was actually poison. "Tell me all about yourself." I gripped my fork so tight my fingers hurt. Dinner. I just wanted to eat dinner and go back to my room. Was that too much to ask? Yes. Apparently it was way too much to ask. "There's nothing to tell," I said. I kept my eyes on my plate. "Oh, I think there's a lot to tell." Vivian sat right across from me at the competitors' table. Her smile never touched her cold eyes. "After what happened today at the ceremony... you must be someone very, very special." Other competitors leaned in. Their ears practically growing bigger. Great. I had an audience for this torture. "Nothing happened today," I said carefully. "Nothing?" Vivian laughed. It wasn't a nice sound. "The kings' eyes turned gold, Aria. Bright gold. Like their wolves were trying to burst out of their skin." "You must have seen wrong." "I've known those kings my whole life." Her vo

Aria POV"Competitors, enter the arena!"My stomach twisted so hard I almost doubled over. This was it. The Trial of Strength. My first real test. And I was about to walk in there with a wolf that nobody had seen for three hundred years. No pressure. No pressure at all.I walked through the gates with the other competitors. The arena was massive. A huge circle of dirt surrounded by seats that went up and up into the sky. Hundreds of people filled those seats. Maybe thousands. All of them here to watch us fight. And at the very top, in the best seats of all, two thrones. Two kings.I could feel their eyes on me even from far away. The bond hummed in my chest like a living thing. Not now. Focus. Just focus on the fight."First round matches will now be announced!" Blake stood in the center of the arena, holding a long list. He started calling out names in pairs. My name was called with a tall woman I didn't know. Brown hair. Mean eyes. From some pack in the south. At least it's not Vivi
