KAIAI drop to my knees beside him, my hands hovering over his body, shaking. Blood. There's so much blood matting his dark fur. Three silver arrows stick out of him. He's not moving."Vincent?" My voice comes out small, terrified. I reach for him, then pull back, not knowing where to touch without hurting him. "Vincent, please."Nothing. No response. No movement. My breath comes in short, panicked gasps. What do I do? What am I supposed to do?I press my ear to his chest, desperate to hear something—anything. His fur is warm against my cheek, but I can't hear past the blood rushing in my own ears.Breathe. I need to breathe.

KAIAAn hour into our trek through the increasingly remote forest roads, my arms are screaming from supporting Vincent's weight. He's doing better than he was in the cave—the fever has broken, leaving him pale but more lucid, but he's still weak, still healing from the silver poisoning that spider-webbed through his system."We can rest," I say for the third time, glancing at his face. Sweat beads along his hairline despite the cool mountain air."I'm fine," he says, and I bite back the urge to snap at him.Lewis leads the way, checking his phone periodically to confirm the coordinates. Talia scouts ahead, her movements graceful and sure, even on the uneven terrain. Every few minutes, she doubles back to report: nothing yet, still clear, almost there.

KAIAMom collapses the moment we're through, her legs giving out. I catch her, lowering us both to the dusty floor. Her weight is almost nothing in my arms—she's lost so much weight, her frame fragile under the torn hospital gown.Vincent sinks down beside us with a pained grunt, finally admitting his limitations."You okay?" I ask him, even though the answer is obvious."Better than I would've been if you hadn't fought like that." His eyes meet mine, and there's something new in them. Something that makes my stomach flip. "Where did you learn to fight like that?""I don't know." And it's true. Those moves, that speed—I've never fought like that before in my life. "It just... happened."Lew

VINCENTI don't wait long. Can't.The moment the doctor finishes checking my vitals and unhooks the IV for the night, I'm out the door. My body protests, but none of that matters right now.I find her in the hallway outside Rosa's room. Her back is to me, but I'd recognize her anywhere. The curve of her shoulders. The way she holds herself when she's trying to be strong."Kaia."She releases a sigh that seems to come from somewhere deep. Doesn't turn around.I take a step closer. "I know you're pissed. I get it. But I need you to see this from my perspective. When your wolf didn't recognize me, I thought—"She bursts into tears.

Vincent stands behind his massive desk, his chest heaving, his hands clenched into fists. Papers are scattered across the floor where he must have swept them off in rage. A book lies spine-up against the far wall.Another voice responds—his Beta, Alfred, on speakerphone. "Alpha, the council has made their position clear. They won't recognize an omega as Luna. The pack won't accept—""Then the pack can go to hell!" Vincent's roar shakes the room."Vincent!" I call out.He whips around, and for a split second, I see pure fury in his dark eyes. Then recognition hits, and horror replaces it."Kaia." He's across the room in seconds, his hands coming up to cup my face, checking me over frantically. "You shouldn't be her
