CHAPTER 12: THE UNRAVELING AT THE COMPANYThe elevator doors slid open, Ava stepped in first and Ethan joined almost when the elevator was about to close. He stood beside her, close enough for the scent of his cologne to seduce her but she had her eyes fixed on the elevator floor. The elevator jolted midway and the light flickered. Ava gasped. He turned towards her slowly. “Hey, look at me,” he said calmly. He still remembered she was scared of the dark. “I've got you.” He murmured, his voice was low and assuring. She lifted her eyes reluctantly and without hesitation he leaned in. His lips found hers, this time it was slow and deliberate. Her breath hitched. “Mhmm…” she moaned in his mouth. He claimed her lips with an inexplainable hunger. His tongue explored her mouth with intentional strokes while her fingers curled into his suit. She wanted it, she needed every bit of it. Her heart pounded in her chest and somewhere in her mind she knew it was dangerous; but she no longer ca

AT THE PENTHOUSE The morning sun filled the penthouse. Warm and golden. The apartment smelled faintly of Ethan's cedarwood cologne.Ava moved gently. She brewed coffee, only for herself. Ethan watched her from the corridor. His shirt was halfway buttoned, and his hair was still damp from the shower. He noticed the deliberate movements of her shoulders as she walked through the kitchen, every of her movements were calculated, she was avoiding him.“Ava,” he called her softly. Her heart skipped. His voice always did that to her; low and dangerous. Every time he said her name, she felt this racing heart beat, she can’t explain.“G..good morning, sir.” She stuttered, as she greeted him. “You're avoiding me.” He observed her, he knew something was up with her. Her fingers gripped the coffee mug tightly. “I'm not. Just setting boundaries.” Her answer was plain and firm.He stepped closer to her. “That boundary disappeared the moment I touched your body, Ava.” He said hinting at thei

AT THE PENTHOUSE The night felt quiet over the city, the kind of silence that fell heavy. Ava sat at the edge of the couch in the penthouse, her hands clasped together.Ethan had barely spoken since returning from the office. She watched him stand by the window side. His jaw clenched, as his eyes looked lost in thought. He turned slowly, his eyes landing on her, and something in his chest melted. He walked towards her without hesitation. Just certain.“Ava,” His voice was low but firm. “Don’t push me away anymore.”Her breath hitched. She hadn't expected it. “I…I love you.” Ethan said. The words echoed in her ears. It was just as real as anything she'd ever heard.Like the truth had finally unravelled. “This feeling didn't start today,” he continued, moving closer to her. “Not even yesterday. I've just been in denial not to accept it and own up to it.”He stopped directly in front of her. “I can't pretend anymore, Ava.”Ava’s hands trembled, her heart racing fast. She didn’t look

The ride back home was quiet, not the kind of silence that felt peaceful but the kind that pressed on one’s mind.On Ava's mind.Ava kept her gaze out the window, blinking fast, trying not to show any emotion. Her chest felt tight like Susan had pushed words into her lungs.Ethan drove with one hand on the wheel, his jaw tightening every time he glanced at her. He hadn't said a single word since he left the mansion. She didn't know which one hurt more; Susan's harsh words or Ethan's silence about them. She opened her mouth to speak, but closed it instantly.“Ava,” he called her faintly. She still didn't look at him.“I'm sorry you had to experience that.” He continued with a rough voice. “Susan, she's not someone anyone should face the first time that way.” Ava swallowed, her throat burned with held-back tears.“But you insisted I go with you,” She cried. “I'm sorry about that.” He apologized. “This isn't what I wanted. ”Ava's heart cramped painfully. She didn't say another word.

The restaurant Miranda stayed to wait for Susan was quite exquisite.Private reservations and soundproof walls. She ordered a wine she had no intention of drinking.Susan walked in moments later, in her old money attire, no single hair on her head out of place.“You took quite the time.” Miranda said as soon as Susan reached her table. She sat across Miranda, with straightened shoulders.“You took quite the time.” Miranda voiced again. “I take my time.” She said, her voice cold and firm.“You've seen the news, right? About your stepson. The media is fast with spreading rumors.”“Yes, that girl really means trouble. We have to cut her off.”“He gave me a break up check. He really means to end our relationship.”“He’s forgetting not to bite the hands that feed him. If he's so invested in her, we should have some overthrow in the dynasty.” Susan's voice dropped cold.“What needs to be done?” Miranda asked with a merciless stare in her eyes. She had been always grateful to Susan for pick
