We sat in that theatre for a long time. Eventually Grayson said, “We should call your mother.” “She already knows, doesn't she?” I said. “Grayson.” “She helped me choose the ring,” he said carefully. I stared at him. “My mother helped you choose the ring.” “Three weeks ago,” he said. “She was very decisive about it.” “She’s been sitting on this for three weeks,” I said. “She was remarkably composed about it,” he said. “She knew at Sunday dinner,” I said. “She sat across the table from me knowing and said absolutely nothing.” “She said you deserved to be loved honestly,” Grayson said calmly. “And that this was honest.” I looked at the ring on my hand. Then I picked up my phone and called her. She answered on the first ring. “Well?” she said immediately. “You already know,” I said. “I want to hear it,” she said. “Yes,” I said. “I said yes.” A sound came down the line that I had not heard from my mother in years. Pure uncomplicated joy. Brief and real and completely her.
