Kasen paced his living room, Spike on the sofa with his feet resting on the coffee table, beer in one hand, TV remote in the other.“Kasen, sit down, man. You’re making me seasick with your back and forth.”He stopped and stared at him. “Thanks for your help. Wait ‘til you meet your mate and can’t figure out one goddamn thing. I’ll be there with my beer and remote.”Spike sighed. “You’re making such a big deal out of this. Just take her on a sunset picnic where you’ll have privacy and can do the wild thing again.” The beta pumped his hips up and down on the sofa, humming the apropos song.Kasen growled. Spike gave him an incredulous look, a silly grin on his face.“I’m not the one who was hot doggin’ his mate within seconds of stepping into her office. You barely got the damn door closed in time.”“You are so full of shit, Spike.” He made his way to the kitchen, Spike following. “I had the door fully closed.” A tingle ran up his spine thinking about their hot little jaunt. Fuck, that

Andi sat on Kasen’s sofa, wondering what happened to him. Should she go home? Something weird was going on. Her shifter smell picked up chlorine, mud, and blood.Kasen appeared in the doorway to the living room. “I’m sorry, sweetheart.” He held out a glass of wine. “Here, this is good.” He sat next to her. She realized something was different about him.“You changed your clothes?” Why would he have done that? Just because she tried on and threw off six different outfits before settling on the sundress with a cardigan-type sweater… God, if that wasn’t the hardest decision she’d had to make in a month. Business was easy. Love, she wanted to run screaming from.“Yes. I have to admit that the door locked when I came out to get you. I went around back to get the extra key and had… issues. I got a little mud on my pants, so I changed.”She wondered if the chlorine was from a pool, and the blood—part of the “issue.” But he admitted, actually admitted, that he’d done something silly by accide

Kasen focused intensely on his task at hand. He was one with the water, one with nature. He felt each vibration in the water, each movement to hone in on his prey. A fish was here, a big one. Waiting for dinner to come by. He stretched out his being encasing the life around him.His muscles tightened, preparing for the catch. Then a distant gasp barely registered in his brain. He chose to ignore it, but his wolf didn’t.Danger and the need to protect drove through him so quickly, he almost subconsciously shifted. He jumped back and looked around, trying to figure out what happened to him. Then he saw Andi’s floating body headed downstream. He kicked into a freestyle stroke, desperate to catch her before she reached the rough water and the falls. His insides were ready to explode with fear. He’d never been this scared in his life, and it wasn’t even about him dying. But he’d prefer to be the one to go. He wouldn’t want to live without Andi in his life. The current flowed faster than he

Andi sat quietly staring out the passenger side window as Kasen drove them to the medical examiner’s office in town. She couldn’t imagine what happened. Maybe a car wreck? What kills more than one person? Could it have been the Black Rock Pride? They’d been sniffing around, bringing problems. Maybe they were the ones who left the dead cat on her kitchen table. It would make sense. Her people didn’t do that kind of stuff. Oh, god. Shit just went from bad to worse. What’s worse, the ME wouldn’t release the two victims’ names. He said she needed to come down to identify the bodies before he released any further information. Her dry clothes had sat in the alpha wolf’s dryer and she was able to fully dress before they left. She was in a daze thinking about the deaths, and Kasen directed her actions and got her in his vehicle. Without him guiding her, she probably would still be wandering the house. How could two of her people be dead?Kasen took her by the hand and led her inside the count

Andi stood in awe of the man in control of the crowd. He owned the stage. Every eye was on him, afraid to leave him, probably. He was gorgeous in motion, eloquent, charismatic out the ass. If he were on TV asking viewers to send in money, he’d be a billionaire. He spoke of sacrifice and happiness. Yes, she would sacrifice her happiness to do what’s best for the pride. She wanted this man more than life itself. But she had to stay the course. Put pride first. As long as she had the love of her people, she didn’t need to have love with a mate, right?Kasen winked at her and she felt like a teenager where the hottest guy at prom noticed her. It was giddy happiness, which she quickly needed to squash if she was going to do what was best.He grinned as he walked past her. She didn’t even know what he said, she was so enamored. She snapped out of her daze and went back to the podium. Before she even said anything, one of the men vying for her hand stood.“Who was that, Andi?” The words were
