POV: Lyra"They are here," Tovin said, and the words came out of him like something broken, like a breath that had been held too long and had finally torn loose without permission, ragged at the edges and carrying everything his training had tried to teach him to keep off his face. He stood at the door of the war hall with mud dried dark on his boots and blood on his sleeve that did not belong to him, and his chest moved too fast under his leather vest while his eyes stayed fixed on a point somewhere past my shoulder, not blinking, not settling, as though whatever he had seen in the valley had taken up residence behind his gaze and was not prepared to let go of it.The room went absolutely still, and the stillness was not the kind that comes from peace but the kind that comes from every person in a space drawing a single breath at the same moment and then holding it, not knowing what to do with it yet.I did not move at first because moving was what panic looked like in its earliest fo

POV: Nova"Do not chase her," the voice said, and it arrived to me not from the open air of the forest but from the space between trees, close and careful and carrying the specific quality of someone who does not need volume because they are confident that the space between them and their target is narrow enough already. "Circle wide and cut off the light."I heard the whisper before I saw any of them, and hearing it before seeing them was both the most useful and the most unsettling possible order for those two events to arrive in, because it told me immediately how good they were at covering distance without the distance announcing itself. The forest behind me was still loud with war, carrying all the metal-on-metal sound and the cries and the drums and the smoke-carried heat of an engagement that had not yet resolved itself into anything like quiet, and I was moving through the trees at the edge of the fighting because the fight had required specific things of me in specific places

POV: Kael"Kael, step back," Nova said, and the words arrived in the register she used when the instruction was not a request and was not a command but was something in the space between them — the communication of someone who has assessed the situation fully and is sharing the conclusion of that assessment with someone she trusts to receive it as the gift it is.The ground was still expressing the consequences of the robed figure's intervention, dirt and stone continuing to shift at the edges of the fissure that had split the clearing's center, falling inward with the slow and implacable quality of earth that has been asked to move and is doing so according to the terms of its own physics rather than any urgency above it. Wolves and soldiers alike had retreated from the widening edges with the unanimity of people who share a common understanding of falling ground regardless of what side of a conflict they occupy. The robed figure stood in the space between the forces with the particu

POV: Nova"Hold still, please, and I promise it will not hurt because I am not going to do anything to make it hurt," I said, and I kept my voice at the register that is not a whisper but is the next thing toward a whisper, the register that works best when the person you are speaking to is already working very hard and does not need to spend any additional effort on the receiving. The little boy tried to be brave with everything he had available to him in that moment, which was a considerable amount given that he was also using it all to manage the cut on his forehead and the residual shaking that had not yet received the information that it could stop, and his lip trembled in the specific way of a lip that has been told to hold still and has done its best with the instruction and is near the end of its compliance. His hands were tight in his sister's shirt at the spot where the fabric was already bunched from previous tight-holding, and the specific location of his grip told me this

POV: Lyra"We did not find anyone alive," the scout said, and the words came out of him with the specific quality of something that has been rehearsed during a long journey back because the person carrying the information needed the rehearsal to be able to deliver it without the delivery falling apart, and even with the rehearsal his voice had the rough edge of someone who has seen something that the voice is still working through. He stood before the council fire in the manner of someone who has been sent to deliver what he saw and is delivering it with the understanding that the seeing of it and the delivering of it are two different things with two different costs, and the delivering is not the end of the cost of the seeing, only a step in it. Mud had dried on his boots in the specific way of mud that has been walked through and left behind for hours, and the ash on his cloak had the settled quality of something that had been there long enough to work into the fabric rather than si
