ELLISThe realization settled quietly, as if it had been there long enough to stop announcing itself. Not the dramatic, possessive kind but something quieter than that, a person alone in a dark room with cold coffee, waiting.I gaped at him. Damn maybe I wasn’t a genius after all...he’d been jealous the entire time, he was just good at hiding it.Anyone would be jealous if their roommate was busy boasting of kissing their crush after all. I snorted, guess I got a reaction out of him after all!Whoooo!"Sure." I drawled."Not at all.""Completely normal behavior, sitting in the dark. Timing my return, making strange sounds at me. Very chill, just admit you’re jealous I took your girl.""Would you stop—""I’m just stating the facts, you hate that Pamela likes me—""Who says I like Pamela?" he interjected, and there was a hint of control slipping through, just a touch...like a facade changing with a glance. "She’s not the one I want, so quit whatever it is yore trying to do. The person I

ELLISSo I shared. Not the whole story, had to maintain some dignity and a bit of self-preservation...but I gave them the highlights: how Julian was being nicer to me, the date, the movie, the ice cream, Pamela kissing me outside Kingston Hall. Walking home with my thoughts spiraling out of control.Returning to a dark apartment where Julian was sitting, looking like he’d been there for ages, the cold coffee on the table, and how everything had appeared before I grasped what I was witnessing. The argument. The escalation. The moment when everything shattered. And finally, quietly: "She isn’t the one I want."Silence, just two seconds of it, the kind of silence that comes from quickly processing information. Then Lucas smacked both hands on the table."I FUCKING KNEW IT!"Half the café turned to stare at us. A woman near the window jumped visibly. Someone’s coffee cup rattled in surprise."Will you keep it down-""The tension! The sexual tension! I’ve been saying it from the beginning-

ELLISBy the time I got back to Pinnacle Hall, my brain felt like it had been tossed into a blender and left on high speed all the way home.Given everything that happened that day, that felt pretty spot on. Between Lucas practically drawing up a guest list for my imaginary wedding with Julian Cross and Sera looking at me with that calm, knowing gaze, like she’d already figured everything out and was just waiting for me to catch up...I was completely wiped out in every way possible. Mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually. Maybe even at a cellular level. The evening air had cooled quite a bit on my walk back, carrying with it the scent of rain that hadn’t made up its mind yet. You know that charged feeling the air gets when a storm is considering whether to hit?Students were meandering through campus in loose, laughing groups, living their uncomplicated lives with the carefree attitude of people not currently having a meltdown, and I envied each and every one of them.I stuff

ELLISJulian froze. Not visibly... most people wouldn’t have caught it. But I was watching him, and I noticed the slight pause, the small involuntary halt. Something shifted behind his eyes, like he was contemplating whether to take a step closer to something true. Then his expression smoothed out. Controlled again, but it was different this time, not the automatic composure he’d had before. Something that cost him, the kind that demands something real.He looked away.An exasperated breath escaped him. His hand raked through his hair, messing it up further, and the gesture was so uncharacteristically open that I felt something stir in my chest that I didn’t quite know how to handle."It doesn’t matter," he said."It clearly does.""Ellis—""Julian."He briefly closed his eyes. When he opened them, he looked exhausted in a way that had nothing to do with sleep, like he’d been carrying a heavy weight for a while and was starting to feel the strain."I shouldn’t have made assumptions,"

ELLIS Julian leaned back against the counter, looking relaxed, like someone who’s never had to question whether they belong anywhere, that effortless confidence that comes naturally to people who’ve always been allowed to take up space. It was infuriating. I’d been annoyed by it for weeks, and it was still getting on my nerves. "I apologized," he said. I blinked. "What?" "Earlier." His gaze remained steady on me, patient and doing way too much. "I apologized." "And?" "And," he said, with the smoothness of someone who had clearly been thinking about this for a while, "it’s your turn." I just stared at him, letting the sentence sink in. As I processed it. Then I laughed once again, genuinely, involuntarily, like someone hit with unexpected news. What the actual fuck? Then I laughed harder, then I looked at his serious face, and the laughter died in an instant. "W...why the hell do I have to apologize to you, huh?" A faint smile appeared, the one I had developed a complicate
