Lahat ng Kabanata ng We Were Almost : Kabanata 51 - Kabanata 60

A week has passed since the bench.A week of Maya going through the motions. Work. Home. Sleep. Repeat. The messages had stopped. No new texts. No new numbers. Just silence. She told herself it was good. The mystery was over. Whoever it was had moved on.But every night, she lay awake thinking about the words. He still remembers the coffee. He still sits on the bench sometimes. He's never stopped loving you.Daniel called every evening.Same time. Same questions. Same careful distance."How was work?""Fine.""Eat anything good?""Takeout.""Sleep okay?""Not really."He never pushed. Never asked about the messages. Never mentioned Ethan. But she heard it in his voice. The hurt. The waiting. The hope. One night, he asked something different."Maya. Are we going to make it?"The question hung in the air.She didn't answer right away."I don't know."He was quiet."That's honest.""I'm trying to be.""Do you want to make it?"She thought about it. Really thought."Yes. I think so.""You

Maya woke up to sunlight and confusion. For a moment, she didn't know where she was. The ceiling was wrong. The walls were wrong. The light was wrong. Then she remembered. The bench. Ethan. The drive. The hotel. She turned her head.He was asleep in the chair beside the bed. Same clothes as yesterday. Face peaceful. Young in sleep. He had stayed. All night. Just to be near her.She watched him for a long moment. This man. This man she had loved for half her life.He stirred. Opened his eyes. Saw her watching.Smiled."Hey.""Hey.""Sleep okay?""Not really.""Me neither."They looked at each other. Then she said: "Thank you for staying.""Where else would I be?"She didn't have an answer. They got breakfast at a small café near the hotel.Normal people. Normal morning. Them."I should call Daniel," Maya said."Do you want to?""No. But I have to."He nodded."Can I ask you something first?""Anything.""What are you feeling? Right now. At this moment."She thought about it."Scared. C

Friday came slowly.Maya packed her bag. Checked it twice. Three times. Folded the same shirt four times. Unfolded it. Folded it again."Relax," Bisi said on the phone. She was on speaker, probably painting her nails or doing something normal while Maya had a breakdown."I am relaxed.""You just refolded that shirt three times. I can hear it."Maya looked at the shirt in her hands. Bisi was right."I'm nervous.""No kidding.""What if it's awkward? What if we run out of things to say? What if…""Maya. Stop.""You've loved this man for half your life. He's loved you for even longer. You'll be fine.""You don't know that.""I know you. And I know him. You'll be fine."Maya took a breath."Okay.""Now go. Drive safe. Text me when you get there.""I will.""And Maya?""Yeah?""Enjoy it. You deserve this."She drove five hours.Same roads she'd driven so many times. To school. To home. To him. Away from him.The landscape blurred past. Fields. Towns. Gas stations. All familiar. But the fee

Two weeks passed. Two weeks of talking. Two weeks of planning. Two weeks of Maya's mind racing through every possible scenario.Ethan's move was confirmed. Three months. Across the country. A promotion he couldn't refuse."I could work anywhere," she said one night. They were on the phone. Same conversation they'd been having for days."You have a life there. Friends. Your mother. Bisi.""I could visit.""Once a month isn't enough.""I know.""So what do we do?"She didn't have an answer.Bisi came over that weekend. They sat on the balcony. Wine. Takeout. The usual."You're driving yourself crazy," Bisi said."I know.""What does your heart say?"Maya thought about it."It says go with him.""And your head?""It says stay. Be logical. Don't uproot your whole life for a relationship that might not work."Bisi nodded."So you're torn.""Yes.""What does Ethan say?""He says whatever I decide, he'll wait. He'll make it work.""That's what a good man says.""I know.""So what's the probl

The moving day arrived like a storm.Maya woke up at 4am. Heart pounding. Stomach churning. The kind of morning where everything feels both terrifying and inevitable. She lay in bed staring at the ceiling. Same ceiling. Same cracks. Same room she'd grown up in.It's different now.Today, she was leaving. Her mother appeared in the doorway."You're awake.""Couldn't sleep.""Me neither."Her mother crossed the room. Sat on the edge of the bed. Took her hand."Are you sure about this, Aya?"Maya looked at her. At the woman who had raised her. Who had held her through every heartbreak. Who was about to watch her daughter move across the country."No," Maya said honestly. "But I'm doing it anyway."Her mother smiled. Sad. Proud."That's brave.""Or stupid.""Sometimes they're the same thing."They had breakfast together.Same kitchen. Same table. Same tea.Everything is the same."I'll visit," Maya said. "Every holiday. Every chance I get.""I know.""You'll come visit too. The city is be
