Nova entered the chamber holding Jax's hand and immediately understood two things: this room was ancient, and Cael was absolutely offending Elder Kaelith. Cael stood behind Elle, his arms wrapped around her, sacred ceremony be damned. He kissed the top of her head unapologetically. Nova had never been in this chamber before; it was much larger than the one used for her pack initiation, with rows of stone pews. There were no windows, and the only light came from the large ceremonial metal basin at the front. The same Elder who was at her pack initiation, Elder Kaelith was watching Cael with narrowed eyes and pursed lips. When they reached their place, she and Elle made quick eye contact. The look on Elle's face said, I am well aware how offended this woman is and I am enjoying it.Nova fought the urge to grin, then she made eye contact with Fin. He held her gaze for a second, but then looked away first. "Beta Designate, step forward," Aeron intoned, his voice echoing through the c

The heat washing into her grew hotter, then began to fade. "The flame knows truth," Aeron intoned, finally breaking the silence. "Should your heart bear deceit, should your soul have stained the vow to your mate and Gamma, should you dishonor them, or should the ancestors deem you unworthy of dominion, it will burn you. Do you stand ready to be judged?"Her voice came out calmer than she felt, which was a mercy. "I stand before the flame without deceit. Let it judge me as it will." "Alpha, it is within your right to deny or allow such motion. Do you have any objections for her to step into her role?""I hold no objections." Fin sounded like he'd been running a marathon with weights strapped to his body. Every word came out strained.Everyone heard it.Nova glanced at him again, genuinely concerned, but he didn't meet her gaze. She felt another wave of heat come over her."Do you offer your oath to Shadowclaw, to serve with strength of heart, clarity of mind, and loyalty unbroken as

The second they cleared the hall, Jax had her off her feet. He booked it to their quarters, and kicked the door shut behind him.He laid her on the bed and pulled her cloak loose. She didn't move."You a little warm, baby?"Understatement of the century. She was radiating heat like a furnace with a grudge."Jax... are you okay?" Her voice was distant."You are going into heat, Nova."A look of realization rolled across her face. How did she not consider it? She was marked and that was all that was needed to go into heat. Right?Unbeknownst to her, her scent, her sweat, all of it was driving him absolutely crazy. He locked their door. Checked it. Then checked it again. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew that if anyone knocked on this door in the next twelve hours, he would not answer it politely. Then he went into the bathing chamber and turned on the cold water faucet. When he came back into the room, he saw Nova hadn't attempted to remove her cloak fully or even move. He pul

The first rule of hosting a man you didn't fully trust was to seat him where you could watch his hands. The second rule was to keep everything he wanted just out of reach. Fin intended to follow both. Unbeknownst to him at this point in time, the thing Balen Bloodmoon wanted was standing in the back, pretending to be invisible, and didn't think to mention she knew him beforehand.A detail, he later would learn she filed under "not important enough to bring up."Four Bloodmoon banners snapped in the cold wind, bearing the jagged black crescent.Alpha Balen Bloodmoon dismounted his horse first, regal in silver-trimmed furs. At his side, his son, Grant, stood tall and broad-shouldered, but with the uncomfortable stiffness of someone still learning to wear power.Jax: There he is. Meredith's oneway ticket out of Shadowclaw. Fin: Exactly. Cael: For the record, she kicked an omega today. Full kick. Elder Norrin witnessed it. Because Nova is attending dinner. And now she is refusing to le

Nova didn't know it yet, but she was fifteen minutes away from redrawing a border."Saints above," Balen muttered, as another target shot skyward, "damn elders are still set on our magic ban. I would do this every morning."Fin smirked, drawing back his bowstring. "If Bloodmoon wishes for entertainment, you only had to ask." He released an arrow, that should have hit a bullseye on a blue target. But the target vanished before it could hit, and the arrow buried itself in a snowbank."Hah." Balen clapped Fin on the back like they were old friends. "Even you can't keep up with your own toys.""The snowbank was the backup target.""Was it?""No.""We have been circling the same argument for two days now. Let's raise the stakes and settle it here."Fin lowered the bow and turned to look at Balen. "Stakes?""Yes. Three arrows. Bullseyes only. Three points for blue. Two for red. Your best archer against mine. If Shadowclaw wins, you gain full access to the ridge for the entire rogue season.
