After thirty more minutes of snowball carnage, the three of them finally said their goodbyes to the kids and started the walk back toward the castle. It was fully dark now, lanterns glowing along the main path, flakes drifting lazily from the sky.Nova felt exhaustion pulling at her bones. The good kind, the kind that came from laughter and warmth and finally, finally feeling like she belonged somewhere.Elle was animatedly telling Cael about a kid who tried to duel her with a stick, and Cael kept reenacting his "snow monster death scene," each version more dramatic than the last. Nova laughed at both of them. They had just stepped onto the castle grounds when something fast blurred through the dark. Before she could register it, strong arms were around her waist, lifting her clean off the ground.Nova shrieked.Jax spun her once, laughing against her neck, then peppered her face with kisses. Cheeks, nose, forehead, anywhere he could reach.

Nova's blood was silver before it turned red. That was the detail everyone fixated on, the part no one could explain.Jax already knew her blood was silver. The color wasn't what kept him up at night. It was the single tear that ran through it while she stared at him, blood pouring from her nose and dripping through her fingers. But to understand how they got there, you have to go back three weeks, to the night Jax and Cael did something no Beta and Gamma had done in over a century. They sat down. The Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and elders always dined separate from the pack. It was a line drawn, reflecting hierarchy, and questioned by no one. That changed one quiet evening when Jax and Cael strolled into the main dining hall and dropped into the seats beside Elle and Nova. The entire room stilled. Every set of eyes locked on them. It was the equivalent of seeing their commanding officer in pajamas. Technically possible. Spiritually devastating.Nova blushed, flustered and exchanged a glance

Warmth.Pressure.Then a stabbing ache in her chest, and the familiar taste of blood in her mouth. Then nothing for a long time. Finally, Nova's eyes flew open.Everything was hazy — soft lighting, muted voices, the lingering scent of herbs and blood.Jax was sitting in a chair at her bedside, head in his hands, shoulders slumped like the weight of the world had collapsed onto him. His head jerked up when he felt her stir."Thank the gods," he breathed, voice cracking. Before she could say a word, he leaned forward and kissed her — not on the lips, but everywhere else. Her forehead. Her cheeks. Her nose. Her chin. As if to confirm she was real, alive. He looked like hell. Like he hadn't slept or eaten in days. His eyes were bloodshot."I swear," he muttered with a tired grin, brushing hair from her face, "if I have to carry you unconscious one more time, I'm just getting you your own damn stretcher. Embroidered and everything. Maybe with wheels and a cup holder."Nova laughed softly,

Nova didn't remember where she was. Her body felt wrecked. Throat dry, skin too warm. The light through the window was golden and low. The sun was setting. They'd gotten back late last night. Had she slept through the entire day? Then she felt him. They were completely naked and his weight was fully pinning her against the sheets. His skin was burning hot against hers."Jax?" No answer. She gave him a gentle shake. Nothing. Her stomach dropped.Maybe he was just tired and needed rest.Or maybe it was from the thing that made her face burn. The memory hit her in fragments, each one worse than the last. Her wolf. His neck. Teeth. The sound he made. She shut that thought down so fast her brain nearly cramped. She wiggled out from under him, and pushed herself upright. Every muscle protested. Her body moved like it had been borrowed overnight and returned in worse condition. She swung her legs off the bed, feet touchin

The moment Nova's blood touched Jax's lips, his body jolted like he'd been struck by lightning. She stepped back, her heart pounding. For a few seconds, nothing happened. Then his eyes snapped open."Jax," she whispered. "You're awake."He blinked at her — once, twice — confusion tightening across his face."Who the fuck are you?"Before she could answer, his hand shot out, gripped her wrist, and with a feral growl, threw her across the room. She hit the wall hard, air knocked from her lungs."Nova!" Elle screamed.Cael lunged forward. "Hey! Easy—"Jax turned and punched him, a clean blow that sent the Beta sprawling.Cael hit the floor with a grunt. "Noted," he wheezed.Jax stumbled back, panting, feral, glowing with something not just wolf. His body shimmered with power, heat radiating off his skin.He bolted out the door, the sound of his bones snapping as he shifted mid-r
