ELLIOTI froze as I realized the words that just came out of my mouth. I just said I was in love with Asher. It was impulsive but as I probed my mind, I realized I meant it.Dad stiffened too. “You can’t possibly mean that. You don’t know what you’re saying.”“I really don’t care if you believe me or not.”He shook his head. “Your mum would be very disappointed in you if she could see you right now. What do you think she’ll have to say about you dating your stepbrother?”I tensed. The blood in my veins turned to ice. “Don’t you dare drag my mother into this. Now you care about her ‘cos it fits your agenda, right?”I ignored the doubt creeping into my mind. The one that told me Dad was right and my mum would be disappointed in me.Instead, I forced myself to remember that day at the cemetery. The one where he told me that Mum would want me to be happy. Because it was the truth. That was who my mother was. Not the person Dad was painting her to be.“You don’t even know her,” I went on.

ASHERThat finally made her stop. “Of course, I’m aware.”“And? Don’t you find something wrong with that? Don’t you think this is a gross exaggeration of things?”“Look,” she began carefully. “I might not agree with Simon’s decision but… it’s not my place to decide how he wants to handle things with his son.”“Not your place? God, are you even listening to yourself? I never thought you’d be this… uncaring.”Her eyes hardened. “Careful how you speak to me, Asher.”“Don’t you think it’s a little unfair that I get to stay in this house while Elliot is gone?”“I told you. It’s not my place to decide these things.”“So you wouldn’t care if I was gone? If the roles were reversed, would you care? Would you appeal to Simon or would you still leave it up to him to decide?”She exhaled sharply, her irritation shining through. “I don’t… God, Asher would you stop? Just stop… stop trying to make me out to be a villain.”My anger faded a little. “I’m not trying to do anything, mum.”“Yes, you are.

ASHERSebastian opened the door, took one look at me standing there with my bags, and immediately let out a long sigh.I found it quite insulting. He was acting like something unpleasant just showed up at his doorstep.“Why are you acting like that? I already told you I was coming.”“Well, I didn’t think you were serious,” he said, folding his arms. “Besides, that’s exactly the problem. You told me.”I snorted. “What, did you expect me to beg?”He pursed his lips. “Not really. But a little ‘please’ would have sufficed.”“You’d have to wait a long time because I’m not doing that. That’s not the nature of our relationship.”“Oh, I already know how one-sided our relationship is. You don’t need to tell me.”I rolled my eyes. “Your mum made a mistake when she chose James as your middle name. It should’ve been ‘dramatic’ instead.”“Haha, very funny. You didn’t wait for my answer before coming but I’ll tell you now.” He smiled sweetly. “The answer is no.”I raised an eyebrow. “No?”“No,” he

ELLIOT“I think we should egg his car.”I looked up from where I was sitting cross-legged on Elsa’s couch.“What?”“The car,” Lucas repeated calmly as he bit into a fry. “Your dad’s car. We should egg it. Maybe slash a tire too if we’re feeling creative.”“I don't think that's a good idea,” Houston said immediately from beside him. "That's a crime, isn't it?"Lucas looked offended. “You people never let me express myself. You never take my ideas seriously.”“It’s because your solutions always involve vandalism,” Elsa replied.Lucas shrugged. “Vandalism isn't always a bad idea. I would say it builds character.”I snorted despite myself. The sound surprised even me.It’d been a while since I genuinely laughed. Two weeks to be precise. It's been two weeks since I left the house. It isn't as terrible as I imagined it would be, mostly thanks to Elsa accommodating me.It hasn't been bad staying with her, if you ignored how anal she was about certain things like how certain plates were washe

ELLIOTHospitals have always terrified me. It wasn’t in the normal way people feared them. It wasn’t because of the needles or the blood or the sharp antiseptic smell that clung to the air. It wasn’t even because of the tears and the sadness or how depressing they were.It was because, to me, hospitals signified loss. To me, they meant pain, suffering.Every hallway felt haunted. Every waiting room carried painful memories that I spent years trying to forget. But now I was back in one again. My stomach churned violently as Asher parked the car in the hospital parking lot.The entire drive there had been a blur.I barely remembered calling him after hanging up with Margaret.I only remembered hearing his voice immediately sharpen with concern. Only remembered him immediately saying he was coming with me.He didn’t ask and for once I was grateful for his demanding nature.Because I didn’t think I could do this alone. Now he glanced toward me from the driver’s seat, his brows furrowed
