Chapter 151: A Mother’s Warning

KATHRYN'S POVThe call came in the morning. I was sitting by the living room window trying to read some papers Iris's lawyer had left for me. Then I saw the name. Mrs. Mayers. My fingers just froze. For a second I just stared at the screen. My first thought was to ignore the call. After everything that happened I didn't really want to talk to her. I had been in court, with her standing by her son questioning him. I didn't see the point.Something made me hesitate.Maybe I was curious. Maybe I was just tired. Maybe I didn't care anymore. So I answered."Hello."There was a pause before she spoke. "Kathryn."Her voice sounded different. The usual confidence was gone. She sounded more human."I do not have the right to ask this, " she said with caution. "But can we meet?"I frowned. My body got stiff."I do not think that is an idea.""I get why you would say no."She did not. She kept pushing. She just accepted my no. That made me think again."I'm not asking you to come to my home,”

Chapter 152: The Case Opens

KATHRYN'S POVThe drive back to the penthouse was really quiet, not like the drive to the hotel. This time the silence felt different. Before the silence was filled with not knowing what would happen. Now it felt like we were heading somewhere.I could not stop thinking about what Mrs. Mayers said at the end.Get her out.It stuck with me because she said it calmly. She did not try to convince me or make me feel sorry for her. She just said it like it was a fact. That scared me more than if she had been crying or yelling. When we got to the penthouse floor Iris was already waiting outside the apartment. He looked up as soon as he heard the elevator. Our eyes. He looked at my face to see how I was doing. He did not ask me any questions. He just quietly said, "How did it go?" after he unlocked the door.I went inside. Put my bag on the table."It was weird, " I said.He closed the door. Did not rush me to talk."Was it good weird or bad weird?" he asked.I looked at him."I am not reall

Chapter 153: Who Am I Without This Fight?

KATHRYN’S POVThe apartment became really quiet as the evening came to the city. Once the lawyers stopped calling me and the emails stopped coming it was finally quiet. The legal battle had started hours ago.I stood in the kitchen for a moment before I opened one of the cabinets."I didn't know you drank wine " Iris said from the dining table as he looked up from a folder he had not touched in ten minutes."I don't " I said truthfully getting a bottle of wine anyway. "I don't drink wine often."I found two glasses, poured wine into each, and took them to the table. I put one glass in front of Iris. Sat down across from him. Neither of us picked up our glasses because we both knew I did not get the wine just to drink it."I think I just needed something to hold, " I said with a smile that quickly faded.Iris. He did not try to make me feel better."I understand " he said.I put my hands around my glass. Let the cool stem rest between my fingers. I was trying to think of what to say. T

Chapter 154: Three Days Before Forever

IRIS’S POVKathryn's words were still in the room even after she stopped talking. The apartment was quiet again. I could still hear the hurt in what she said. She was not asking me to fix things. She was not asking me to explain myself. She just wanted to show me how my being away had affected her and for the time I was not trying to avoid it.She was standing by the window with her back to me wiping away tears. I could see the city lights on the glass. It made her seem close but also really far away.I took a breath before I said anything."If you decide to move out " I said slowly "I will not stop you."Kathryn did not say anything."Not tonight," I added. She turned around. Looked at me."Iris...""You have nowhere to go tonight," I said calmly, trying not to sound desperate, because she was already feeling a lot. "Every hotel will feel like a place every apartment will feel empty and you will be making decisions while you are still hurting."She looked away again."I do not want

Chapter 155: Where I Hid from Death

IRIS’S POVThe silence that followed my confession felt heavier than any accusation Kathryn could have thrown at me. Now no lies were standing between us, just the truth. I had wanted Kathryn to know the truth for years. Hearing it out loud made me realize how hard it was to ask someone to understand a decision that had hurt both our lives.Kathryn stood across from me tears falling down her face. She never looked away. Her silence was not empty anymore; it was as if she were searching for something, weighing every word I said against the memories of the five years."I thought that was everything," Kathryn whispered after a time. "I thought you had finally told me everything."I looked down for a moment."There is more " I said.Kathryn's face changed, as if she was not sure she could handle more."I do not know if I have the strength for more " she said."You deserve to know " I said.I leaned back in my chair. For the first time in years, I stopped trying to decide what parts of my

Chapter 156: The Poison at My Table

IRIS’S POV I leaned forward resting my forearms on my knees and stared at the wine sitting between us. For a moment I wondered if I should stop there. She had already heard the truth to change everything she thought about my disappearance. Then I remembered why I promised myself no secrets. "There is one thing," I said quietly. Kathryn looked at me. "There always seems to be one thing." There was no sarcasm in her voice now. There was exhaustion. I nodded. "I know." She pulled her chair closer. Folded her hands on the table. "Then don't protect me this time." "I won't." I took a breath. "After I isolated myself in this penthouse Jacob visited me often." Her eyebrows went up a bit. "He said I shouldn't be alone." I gave a smile that went away quickly. "At the time I thought he was being a brother." Kathryn stayed quiet so I kept going. "He arranged everything." "My doctor visits." "My medications." "My meals." "When my doctors said I should have someone watching m

Chapter 157: The Lie That Stole My Life

IRIS’S POVKathryn stared at me like she did not know me anymore. Every time I told her something it was like I was taking away a piece of the life we thought was real. I could see the questions in her eyes. She did not say anything. She just let me keep talking waiting for me to explain the betrayal that was getting bigger and bigger."I did not call the police away, " I said, looking down at the table. "If I had Jacob would have said it was not true the nurse would have. I would have been left with nothing. I needed to find proof that nobody could deny."Kathryn swallowed hard and asked quietly, "What did you do with the soup?""I kept it,” I said. She looked surprised."I sealed the bowl took pictures of everything in the kitchen and got the little glass vial that the nurse had used to put something in my food. Then I took it all to a lab that did not know the Mayers family. I did not trust anyone connected to our family anymore not after what Evelyn told me."Kathryn leaned forwar

Chapter 158: Stealing More Than a Fortune

IRIS’S POVKathryn did not say a word after I finished speaking. I did not blame her because everything I had found out was really hard to believe. The apartment was very quiet. The city lights outside the windows just kept shining like nothing was wrong. I rubbed my hands together not because I was nervous. Because some memories still felt very heavy to me.I said to Kathryn, "I wish that were the end of it." I looked at her across the kitchen island. "I wish I could tell you that I found out the truth fired everyone who was involved and just walked away from all of it. By then I knew there had to be something much bigger going on."Kathryn looked at me carefully before she said anything."You did not think Jacob did it all by himself " she said.I said, "No I did not think that." My voice was steady because I had thought about all of this for a time before talking about it. "A man cannot make up a lie that's so complicated overnight and he cannot keep it going for years without a g

Chapter 159: The Hardest Goodbye

IRIS’S POVKathryn did not say a word after I told her everything. The silence between us was not uncomfortable like it used to be. It was like the silence was saying something different now. She was not looking at me like she did not believe me anymore. She was looking at me like she was trying to understand how I could go through so much and still not be a bad person."You could have told everyone about Jacob a time ago,” she said finally. Her voice was soft and gentle. "After everything you found out, why did you not?"I looked down at my drink. I turned the glass around in my hand because the answer was not simple. It was never simple."Because Jacob is my brother," I said quietly. After everything he did saying those words still felt heavy. "I kept hoping he would realize what he was doing and stop. I thought that if I gave him time he would change."Kathryn looked sad. The sharpness in her face was gone."So Jacob did not know?" she asked.I shook my head. "No he had no idea I

Chapter 160: Love Chose Courage

IRIS’S POVKathryn's tears would not. Every time she tried to wipe them away more came. She put her head in her hands and her shoulders shook with a kind of tiredness that sleep could not fix. Watching her like this hurt me more than all the things I found out about Jacob because even though we had proof of what he did it could not erase the years he took from her.I went closer to her. I did not say anything right away. I gave her space to breathe because I learned that when people are sad they need time to feel their emotions. After a while, I put my hand on the table between us so she could decide whether she wanted me to comfort her."Kathryn," I said, "look at me."She did not.Another tear fell from her eye onto the table. Her voice was shaky. "I do not know what is real anymore," she said. Those words felt heavy between us.She laughed,. It was not a happy laugh. It was a broken sound. "For years I asked myself what I did wrong," she said. "I blamed myself for losing you. Then I
