My office is quiet when I reach it, the heavy door swinging shut with a soft click. I collapse into my chair. "Finally."My wolf’s voice rumbles in my head before I can even open the first document."You know she's right."I close my eyes. "Don't start.""We should go after our mate.""She'll probably throw me out on my ass.""Then we'll stand outside until she lets us in."I sigh, rubbing my temples. "Why couldn't the Moon Goddess give us an ordinary woman?"My wolf is silent for a moment, then he answers, his tone thoughtful. "If she had, how would we have defeated Father?"I don't have a response for that."You saw what she did.""I know.""She protected Mother.""I know.""She saved us.""I know""Then stop complaining."I glare at the wall, the knot in my chest tightening. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?""Very much."I rub my face, the stubble rough against my palms. "So you really have no problem being Queen?"We were born to be Queen."The words make me wince. "All I want

"What happened?"he asks moving closer to me, though his steps is hesitant on the wooden floor."Nothing.""You were arguing with someone.""My wolf."He blinks. "Oh."I sit on the edge of the bed while Kei remains standing there, a looming presence I can feel without looking."Is the baby okay?"The question breaks the remaining walls I had up despite my best efforts to keep them up and traitorous warmth spreads through my chest. "Yes.""Are you sure?""Yes, Kei."He nods but doesn't leave. I look at him, my patience worn thin. "You can go."His shoulders lower slightly, the rejection landing exactly as I intended. "You don't want me here.""I didn't say that.""You didn't have to."I look away, focusing on a loose thread in the quilt. Anything but him.He takes a breath, and I can feel the effort it takes. "I know you don't believe me yet.""You're right.""But I do care about you."I laugh bitterly. "That's convenient.""I'm serious.""So am I."He comes closer but stops before reac

The carriage rocks gently beneath me, its steady rhythm soothing. Outside my window, the world blurs into green and brown.Across from me, Kei is silent. He hasn't tried to fill the quiet with pointless words and force conversations, and I appreciate that more than I want to admit. Still, I feel his gaze on my skin every few minutes. I ignore it, staring harder at the passing trees, pretending I don't notice. The journey to the palace is long, and after the first few hours, even I have to admit the carriage was a better idea than travelling by wolf or using my powers. When Kei suggested it, I almost argued out of habit. Then I saw the look in his eyes. It wasn't pity. It wasn't him trying to control me. He wasn't looking at my face. He was looking at my stomach. And in his gaze, there was a knowing I couldn't deny that told me he wasn't guessing about how exhausting the journey could become. He'd been in my body. He knew the bone-deep weariness that came with this child, and that kno

Several elders exchange uneasy looks. My father rises from the throne, his tall frame looming. "You will leave this chamber before I have you stripped and flogged in front of everyone.""Oh, Father, I'm glad to see you haven't changed," I say, my voice sweet as poison. "This makes my job easier.""Princess or not, you will answer for your actions, Ravelle." He snaps, then his glare cuts past me to Kei. "And you, Alpha Kei. You will stay and explain yourself."A few men murmur in agreement. My father looks at Kei's neck, then at mine. "I don't see your mark on her neck nor the magical cuff I gifted." His gaze sharpens. "Don't tell me you failed to tame this bitch despite my warnings to you."Kei remains calm and it's a counterpoint to the my father's rage. "With all due respect, Your Majesty, my mate isn't a bitch."The entire room goes quiet. My father's mouth falls slightly open."And she was never someone who needed to be tamed.""You dare—""I do." Kei cuts in him off smoothly. "Yo

When the heavy doors finally swing shut behind him, the silence is deafening. I finally look at my mother. She says nothing and just simply crosses the space between us in a few quick steps and wraps her arms around me, pulling me into a hug so tight it almost hurts. For a second I'm too stunned to move. My body stiffens, then I recover and hold her back just as tightly. I bury my face in her shoulder, breathing in that faint, familiar scent of lavender and sorrow. "I've missed you so much," I whisper into her dress. Her arms tighten around me. "I've missed you more, Ravelle," she whispers back, her voice breaking. "Oh, so much more."I pull back slightly, just enough to see her face. She cups my face with both hands, her thumbs stroking my cheeks. "You did it," she breathes, tears slipping down her own cheeks. "You did what no one believed you could do. You became King, Ravelle. King."I smile faintly. "You finally said it."She laughs through her tears, a watery, beautiful sound. "
