I took the lift straight to his room. The smell of antiseptic wasn't that strong here, which worked well for me. I hated hospitals because of the smell that always clung to the hallways like a second skin. On the 7th floor, I exited and took the right turn, as the nurses had directed. His room was the only one in that corner, so it wasn't difficult to locate it. I strode over to the open door and froze on my steps when I saw him. He was sitting on a chair by the window, speaking to a doctor, who looked like she was chewing him out, more than consoling. But that wasn't my issue. My gaze was fixed on the man in the chair. He looked smaller. Kielan had always been broad and imposing, but the man in the chair seemed diminished, swallowed by an oversized jumper, his cheekbones sharp enough to cut glass. I sorted everything out faster and went back to the room to join the conversation.
