Dr. Reeves replied the next morning. A drop point in the city. A pharmacy on a side street. Leave the sample with the name Vale, she said. Her courier collected twice a week. Results within ten days, sometimes less. Ten days. I read it three times. Then closed the laptop and went down to breakfast. Edmund was leaving today. I had counted down to it without meaning to. Three days in this house and the air around the table had felt different... thicker, more deliberate. Like everyone was performing for an audience that kept shifting. He was already at the table when I arrived. Bags presumably packed. Victor beside him, warm as always. Damien at his usual seat, coffee untouched. "Last breakfast," Victor said when I sat down. He said it the way he said most things... warmly, and slightly too aware of the effect. Edmund smiled. "The drive back is easy enough. I've enjoyed it." He looked at Damien when he said it. Damien looked back at him. "Safe travels." Two words. Polite. Empty.
