Elias POVAnother contraction hit, low and sharp, stealing my breath. I gripped the side of the bed, knuckles white, while the monitors beeped like they were mocking me. Kael was right there, his hand covering mine, but even he couldn’t stop this. The pup wanted out. Soon.“Easy... just breathe through it,” Kael murmured, his voice rough from the long night. He looked exhausted, dirt and dried blood still streaked on his arms, but he hadn’t left my side since he got back.I nodded, teeth clenched. “Hurts more than before. Feels... different.” The words came out shaky. I hated how small my voice sounded. I was supposed to be stronger now, helping him through the bond, not lying here falling apart.Kael leaned closer, forehead against mine. His scent wrapped around me, that deep cedar and smoke that always made me feel safe. “You’re doing good. Really good. Halvorsen says the toxin threat is contained for now, but...”“But what?” I pushed, searching his eyes. “Don’t leave it like that.

Elias POVThe contractions were coming every three minutes now. Each one felt longer, deeper, like my body was being squeezed from the inside out. I tried to breathe through it, but a groan slipped out anyway. Kael’s hand never left mine. His thumb kept rubbing slow circles on my skin, but I could feel how tense he was through the bond.“You’re doing so good,” he said quietly. “Just keep breathing. I’ve got you.”“Easy for you to say,” I muttered, trying for a smile that probably looked more like a grimace. “You’re not the one getting ripped in half from the inside.”He let out a soft huff of laughter, but his eyes stayed worried. “Fair point. Wish I could take it for you though.”Another wave started building. I gripped his arm harder. “Don’t... don’t go quiet on me. Talk. Please.”Kael nodded, leaning closer. “Okay. Remember that time in the garden? Right after you found out about the pup. You were so mad at me for hovering.”“I wasn’t mad,” I said, breathing through the peak. “I wa

Elias POVThe contraction that had been building since Kael walked back through the door just... stopped. Not eased. Not passed the way the others had. It just stopped, halfway through, like something had reached in and pulled the plug on my own body."Wait." I grabbed Halvorsen's sleeve before he could turn away. "Something's wrong. It stopped."He came back fast, hands already moving to the monitor strapped across my belly. His face didn't tell me anything, which somehow scared me more than if it had."Give me a second," he said.Kael hadn't sat down since he got back from the wall. He was still standing at the foot of the bed, blood dried dark on his knuckles, watching Halvorsen like he could will the machine to say something good."Talk to me," Kael said. Not a request."Contractions are spacing out again," Halvorsen said slowly. "Ten minutes apart now. Before the attack they were three.""Is that... is that bad?" I asked. My voice came out smaller than I wanted it to."It can hap

Kael VossThe voice on the other side of the cracked door stopped me cold. Low. Calm. Like Draven was having a normal conversation instead of sneaking through my house while my mate was in labor down the hall. I didn't think. I just moved, shoving the door open hard enough that it slammed against the wall.Draven stood in the middle of the old storage room, back to us, talking into a small comm device. No guards with him. Just him, alone, like he really believed he could slip in and out without anyone noticing. His head turned slowly when the door hit. Those cold eyes met mine, and for a second he actually smiled."Voss," he said, voice smooth like nothing was wrong. "Took you longer than I expected."I was across the room before he finished the sentence. My fist connected with his jaw. The crack echoed off the stone walls. He stumbled but didn't go down. Seraphina and Riven were right behind me, weapons ready, but I waved them back. This one was mine."You've got some nerve," I growl

Kael VossElias was breathing hard after the last contraction, his hand still gripping mine like it was the only thing keeping him here. The bond between us felt raw and open, carrying every bit of his pain and determination straight into me. I hated seeing him like this, but I was proud too. He was fighting harder than anyone out on the walls.“Another one’s coming soon,” Halvorsen said quietly, checking the monitors again. “We’re in active labor now. Things are moving faster than I expected after that pause.”I nodded but didn’t take my eyes off Elias. His silver hair was damp with sweat, stuck to his forehead. I brushed it back with my free hand. “You hear that? Our pup’s ready. You’re doing this.”Elias gave a tired smile, the kind that still made my chest tight even after everything. “Feels like he’s in a hurry now that the worst of the fighting died down. Guess he doesn’t want to miss the quiet part.”I huffed a small laugh. “Good. Let’s give him that.”Riven’s voice came throug
