The wind howled through the branches like a warning from the past. Kane gripped the steering wheel tighter as the truck bounced over the old dirt road, his heart pounding hard enough to echo in his ears. "We should not have come back here," Kane said, glancing at Elias in the passenger seat. His voice came out rough, like gravel under tires. "But I could not stay away. This place started everything for us."Elias leaned forward, eyes scanning the thickening trees. "Yeah, I feel it too. The call of the wild pulling us right back. Remember how scared we were the first time? But look at us now. Together. We can handle whatever comes."The truck rolled to a stop at the edge of the familiar clearing. They jumped out, boots hitting the soft earth with solid thuds. Kane slung a small pack over his shoulder while Elias grabbed the water bottles. The air smelled of pine and damp soil, thick enough to taste."You think the trail is still clear?" Kane asked, already moving toward the path. He d

The tiny skates scraped the ice and the whole world seemed to hold its breath as the grandchildren took their first wobbly steps. "Look at them go," Kane said, voice catching a bit as he stood by the boards with Elias. "Little Jake and Mia out there like they own the place already. My heart is racing faster than theirs." Elias leaned on the railing, eyes locked on the kids. "They are naturals. Jake, keep your knees bent a little. Yeah, like that. You got it buddy." Jake wobbled forward, arms out for balance. "Grandpa Kane, is this how you did it? Feels slippery." Kane chuckled and called back quick. "Exactly how I started, kiddo. Slippery and scary but fun. Push off with your back foot gentle. Elias, tell him about your first time." Elias waved at Mia who grabbed the wall. "Mia, sweetie, you are doing great. Hold the edge if you need but try letting go soon. My first steps, I fell flat five times before I laughed about it. Kane here helped me up every time." Mia giggled an

The northern lights exploded overhead in waves of green and purple, turning the frozen lake into a glowing stage that demanded their full attention right then. "Look up, Elias. The sky is putting on a show just for us," Kane said, pushing off on his skates fast across the ice. His breath puffed white in the cold air. "We made it here. Dreams coming true already."Elias caught up quick, skates cutting smooth lines. "No kidding. This beats every game we ever played. What dream we chasing next, Kane? Tell me while we glide."Kane spun slow to face him. "More trips like this. Quiet ones where we just be. But also helping more kids chase their own lights. You first. What future you seeing?"Elias laughed and grabbed Kane hand for a second. "Travel with you. See new rinks. But mostly waking up every day knowing our bond stays solid. The lights up there mirror us. Bright and moving together. Hey, race to that far bank?""You are on," Kane shot back. They pushed hard, skates scraping loud. E

The phone rang sharp at dawn and pulled Kane and Elias from sleep into a day that would test how well they handled quiet after years of constant motion."Who calls this early," Kane muttered as he grabbed the phone. "Hello. Yes this is Kane. Mentoring session today? We are ready. Bring the kids."Elias sat up quick and stretched. "That was Coach from the junior league. Group of twelve showing up in an hour. Coffee first?"Kane already moved toward the kitchen. "Coffee and a plan. These young ones need courage talks more than drills. Family will join later. Kids are sleeping still."Elias followed and poured two cups. "Slower pace feels strange after high stakes but good. Mentoring keeps the fire low and steady. What do we start with?""Stories from our early days," Kane said. "Keep it simple. Acceptance first then courage. You take the ice talk. I handle the team talks."They dressed fast and headed to the local rink. Young players waited by the boards already. One boy named Leo waved

The arena lights blazed on all at once and the crowd roar hit like a wave that nearly knocked Kane and Elias back a step."Feel that," Kane said as they stepped onto the ice. "Same boards same smell but everything else changed. Family and old teammates waiting. This exhibition is going to fly."Elias skated a quick circle. "Crowd is packed. Look at Mike already waving. Sarah Rico Coach all here. Grandkids on the side. Ready to skate with everyone?"Kane nodded and called out. "Mike over here. You still got those legs?"Mike glided over laughing. "Legs and stories. Kane Elias this night feels big. Exhibition for the ages. How does it feel being back under these lights?"Elias answered fast. "Feels like home but better. World shifted because of the fights we put in. Acceptance grew. Teams open now. Sarah your thoughts."Sarah joined them. "World did change. Clinics full of kids who feel safe. You two started that push. Rico come talk."Rico skated in. "Talk and play. I brought the old e
