I woke slowly to the steady rise and fall of Lucian's chest against my back. His arm rested heavily around my waist, holding me close as though he'd gathered me against him sometime during the night and never let go. Gray winter light crept across the ceiling as I lay still, listening to the steady beat of his heart beneath my fingertips. When I shifted, meaning to trace the pale battle scar running along his ribs, his arm tightened around my waist at once. He wasn't asleep. "You think too loudly," he murmured, his voice rough with sleep. "I didn't mean to wake you." "You didn't." A faint smile touched his lips. "But you started worrying, and that was the end of my sleep." A quiet laugh escaped me. I tried to turn toward him, but he only drew me closer and pressed a lingering kiss to my shoulder. "I wasn't worrying." "No?" His lips brushed the side of my neck, slow and unhurried. "You get quiet. Then you disappear into your own head. I've learned the signs." I smiled
