Chapter 1 The Last Minute

The moment I submitted the changes to my college application, a line of text flashed across the screen: "Modification Successful."I stared at those words, my eyes burning with unshed tears. There was one minute left before the system closed.Just then, the phone on my desk buzzed. It was Silas Lind.I answered, and his cheerful voice came through the speaker. "Sonia, you finished your application, right? I can't wait for us to go to college together."I fell silent for a moment before asking, "Are you really looking forward to it?""Of course, I am," he said lightly, as though the answer were obvious. "We've been planning this since we were kids."I couldn't take it anymore, so I hung up on him.My mother and Silas' mother had been college roommates. They were as close as sisters. Hence, Silas and I had grown up together from the day we were born. We were inseparable. When we were little, he always said we'd stay together forever. We went to the same preschool, the same eleme

Chapter 2 A Story With Familiar Characters

Rachel stood obediently beside him.The two of them acted like nothing had happened, as if they truly had come to celebrate their bright futures with a good friend."Sonia, try this. I waited in line for 30 minutes just to buy this."I sat on the couch and watched them take off their shoes and walk in, looking as comfortable as if my home was theirs.Silas sat down beside me and nudged me with his elbow. "Why'd you hang up on me yesterday?""Bad signal," I said bluntly."Then, why didn't you reply to my messages afterward?""I forgot."He let out an "Oh," and didn't press the issue.During the meal, Silas kept talking about how his parents had been packing lately. They were planning to move to Harrington to stay with him as soon as his college acceptance letter arrived.Rachel promptly chimed in and told us that her parents had already started looking at houses in Fairview. My mother picked up the conversation. "If Sonia gets into Bradford University, wouldn't it be wonderfu

Chapter 3 The Truth

Silas didn't reply until 30 minutes later. "Nothing. I was just wondering."…Two days later, it was our graduation dinner. After dinner, everyone headed to a karaoke bar.I sat quietly in the corner with a glass of juice. After a few songs, Rachel suddenly stood up. She picked up the microphone and turned the volume down. "Why don't we all share where they're going to college? Maybe some of us will end up in the same city and can look out for each other."The room instantly came alive. Everyone started calling out college names and cities over one another.I leaned back against the couch without saying a word. After more than half the class had shared where they were going, the class athlete suddenly shouted, "Our academic trio hasn't gone yet!"He wiggled his eyebrows at the three of us. "Sonia, Silas, Rachel… You all applied to Bradford University, right?"Rachel lowered her head shyly as everyone teased them. Then, she reached over and took Silas' hand right before everyo

Chapter 4 The Results

The gleeful smile on Rachel's face froze.I didn't spare her another glance as I pushed open the KTV room door and strode out.My phone started blowing up with messages from Silas as soon as I left."Sonia, what did you mean by what you said before you left?""What are you trying to do?""I told you it was just a prank. Did you really have to get this upset?"I didn't reply. I blocked both Silas and Rachel on WhatsApp. Still, I'd underestimated just how persistent they could be.…Two days later, my parents had just left for work when the doorbell rang. The moment I opened the door, I saw Silas and Rachel standing outside."Sonia, what exactly are you trying to do?"Silas stepped forward, his brows knitted tightly together as he glared at me. "Why did you block us? And what did you mean by what you said at the KTV room?"I leaned against the doorframe and crossed my arms. "I meant exactly what I said."Rachel's face turned pale."Sonia, we really didn't do it on purpose. I

Chapter 5 The Last Laugh

The private group exploded as soon as Benjamin's announcement appeared in the class group chat."What the heck?""Didn't Rachel and Silas say Sonia never checked her college application? I bet they're eating their words now.""Holy crap!"In the class group chat, I followed everyone else's lead and replied, "Thank you, Mr. Miller."Then, I switched back to the private group. "So, Defense Technology Institute is a community college, huh? How did I not know that?"After that, I tagged both Silas and Rachel and said, "Why aren't you two saying anything? Cat got your tongues?"The moment the message went through, a system notification popped up. Both Silas and Rachel had left the group chat. The member count next to the group name at the top of the screen dropped from 43 to 41.The group chat stayed quiet for a bit. Then, the screen flooded with messages. It was like water coming to a boil.People kept typing "That's awesome!" over and over. Someone sent several exclamation marks

Chapter 6 A Mother's Fury

There was still a long list of things to take care of the next day.…The next morning at breakfast, my mother placed a bowl of oatmeal in front of me and said, "Sonia, you got into Defense Technology Institute. Your father and I want to throw you a graduation party. We'll invite our relatives, along with Silas' family and Rachel's family."My hand froze around my bowl. "Don't invite them."My mother and father both looked up at me."What's wrong? Did you guys fight?"I set my bowl down, causing it to tap against the table with a sharp clink. "Mom, Dad, there's something I need to tell you."It took me about 15 minutes to explain everything from beginning to end.Silas and Rachel had logged into my application account and changed my first-choice of university to the local community college. Fortunately, I had caught it in time and changed it back.My father's spoon slipped from his hand.My mother stared at me for three long seconds. Then, she shot to her feet. The chair scra

Chapter 7 When the World Turned Against Me

Samantha's shoulders shook. It was a long while before she finally spoke, her voice muffled behind her hands. "I failed to raise my son properly."After she left, my mother closed the front door, and the entryway fell silent again. She walked over and stood beside me without saying a word. She simply rested a hand on my shoulder and gave it a firm squeeze.A little after 11 p.m., I was scrolling through my phone when I saw someone share a news article in our class WhatsApp group."What the hell is this? How dare she do such a thing!"The headline read, "Top Student at Prestigious High School Falsely Accused of Tampering With College Application!"The cover image was a selfie of Rachel. It was a nine-photo collage, and every single picture was carefully edited. She smiled sweetly and innocently in every shot, showing off just the right hint of her dimples. There were more than 3,000 comments underneath. The top one had over 5,000 likes. "Sonia Knight has no shame."I scrolled d

Chapter 8 They Wanted Me to Lie

"I was afraid you'd just end up getting even angrier," I replied. My mother looked at me with her red rimmed eyes, her lips pressed into a tight line. She turned her head away and wiped the corner of her eye with her sleeve. She did not cry, but the tip of her nose had turned bright red.She inhaled deeply, pushed open the door, and walked ahead of me.That night, my father sat in the living room for a long time.He usually went to bed at about 10 p.m., but the living room light was still on even though it was already midnight.I got up for a glass of water and saw him sitting on the couch without the TV on. His phone screen glowed with screenshots of the online abuse directed at me.He scrolled through them one by one, his face expressionless. When he heard my footsteps, he looked up. "Sweetheart.""Yeah?""Didn't you say you had evidence? Bring it out. I'll go to the police station with you."I stood there for a moment. Then, I went back to my room and downloaded the three

Chapter 9 No Chance

I looked at them over for two seconds before finally saying, "So, the first thing you did after getting out of detention was to come here and ask me to take the blame and clear your names?"Silas panicked and took another step toward me. "My life will be ruined if this stays on record! What's so hard about posting a statement? It's not like it'll kill you!""Did you ever think about what would've happened if I'd actually ended up at a community college when you changed my college application? Did you ever stop once to consider whether my life would've been ruined?"Rachel's face turned deathly pale. Her lips trembled as she reached toward my arm, but I quickly pulled my hand away. "Sonia, you can't be this heartless. We're begging you. We won't ever bother you again after this. Isn't that enough?"I straightened my spine as I retorted, "You spent seven days in detention because you broke the law. Whether or not I post a statement has nothing to do with it. You stained your own reco

Chapter 10 No Going Back

When Samantha spoke, her voice was cracked with tears. She was also trembling so badly that she could barely get the words out. "Sonia, I'm begging you. Bradford University sent a rescission notice. They said both kids had engaged in misconduct."They'll still have a chance if they take a gap year and apply again. But… what university is ever going to accept their applications if this disciplinary action becomes official?"Rachel's mother, Natalie, grabbed my mother's hand so hard that she nearly stumbled forward in the effort.Natalie's voice shook so badly she could hardly finish a sentence. "We'll pay whatever compensation you want. Just name your price. Please just write a statement saying it was all a misunderstanding. That everyone was just joshing around. They're so young. Their lives can't end like this."Silas' father, Kevin, stood in the back without saying a word. His shoulders were hunched, and his hands were clenched so tightly his knuckles had turned white.Rachel'
