I think people of all ages will find this book a great read when they need a reminder of what it’s like to need an escape from pressure to perform. The book is set in school but the feelings of the book are universal. This book will be suitable for people and ages above those who read fantasy picture books. I would estimate that 11-12 year olds would be able to read and appreciate this long and complex novel. People of older ages are limited only by their own imagination and their ability to connect with others’ shared human experiences and not by the content of this book.

The work is overwhelmingly optimistic and fun. Even in the most desperate of circumstances, Spy School conveys a sense that things will be okay. While YA often delves into darker and more complex emotions, Spy School is not a work that explores the depths of human suffering. The work maintains a very light-hearted and carefree ‘can do’ feeling. This work will be most appreciated by readers who have not yet read stories that contain darker themes and deeper emotions. If I had to choose an age range for the book, I’d say 11–13 years old. ‘Faerie Wars’ is a great book to mirror the era where a child starts to question things and realises that the world is not just black and white. In the faerie realm of Faeries there are politicians, questionable actions and even demons with their own agendas and reasons for things. In ‘Faerie Wars’ Henry has to make very difficult decisions with extreme consequences and this is enjoyable for a reader of an older but still ‘young’ age. Although a lot of description has been used in order to enable the reader to picture scenes, it is not over-excessive or overly poetic in places, thus becoming boring or annoying. It is a ‘bridge’ book in the sense that it is a magical, exciting, fun adventure, and slowly but surely it introduces more complex ideas that eventually lead to epic fantasy of greater complexity.

Mythic books can go for a wide range of ages, but tend to hit their stride with readers 12 and up. Young kids can get into the stories for their adventures, and then older kids can really get into the symbolism. Books like the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series by Rick Riordan are great for middle schoolers. He mixes humor and mythology to make a really fun read. But for adults, a book like The Witch’s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec can offer a really darker, more complex take on the same core stories. The depth of the book can be adjusted for the age of the reader.

You must be talking about a super old Judy Blume book from the 70s? I read my mom’s old copy when I was about 10 years old. It seemed kind of dated when I read it, although the bullying that went on in the book was related to weight, which is still going on today. However, the way that the culture viewed these situations was so different. So, while the feelings that Blume wrote about are timeless, the rest of the book is pretty dated. So I would say that this book is best suited for 9-13 year old kids, but with a giant asterisk. It is a wonderful conversation starter about the kinds of peer pressure that kids today are under. Some of the language and attitudes expressed by the characters in the book would need to be explained by a parent in order for a child to fully understand their relevance today. The book is not a feel good story by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it is pretty harsh in some places. So I would not recommend this book for a sensitive child who is looking for a good story to escape into. The book is a tool. It is up to the parent to decide what message they want to impart to their child and how to have that conversation. A child who is already being bullied by his or her peers may find this book to be very validating, but it could also be very scary for them. It really depends on the individual child.

My two cents: Stop worrying about the age of kids and let them read whatever they’re interested in. If they find a book too hard or boring, they’ll put it down. But if they love it, that’s great. ‘Heidi’ has captivated children of all cultures and languages for 140 years. It’s got a timeless core – children love nature, want a home of their own, and love to be kind. That’s accessible to a very wide range of kids. The specific prose of the story may pose problems for some young readers, but the core of the story is ageless. Just trust the natural curiosity of kids and not some arbitrary age.

This is controversial but essentially it’s better for adults with difficult childhoods. It gives them a model of a healthy, playful, emotionally available parent. So for a five year old it’s fun but for a 35 year old struggling with issues of their own from their childhood it can be therapeutic. It opens up a whole new age range of people who would benefit from seeing a model of secure attachment in action. And that has a value far beyond preschoolers. It’s got value for anyone who wants to see what a supportive and playful family looks like.

Honestly, who cares? A good book is a good book. I left this on the coffee table and my dad just finished reading it. He’s 65.
