For something with that blend of humor and high-stakes quests, I always recommend 'How to Train Your Dragon'. The books are wildly different from the movies—way more sarcastic and surprisingly deep. Hiccup’s voice is hilarious and heartfelt. The plots are epic but never lose that personal, character-driven core. They’re perfect for the same age group and have that irresistible 'just one more chapter' quality.

Okay, I’m going to go a bit against the grain here and say skip the obvious Riordan Presents stuff for a minute. Don’t get me wrong, those are good, but they can feel a bit like more of the same formula.
I found 'Skandar and the Unicorn Thief' by A.F. Steadman to be a breath of fresh air. It’s got that 'chosen kid at a magical school' vibe but with really violent, elemental unicorns you have to bond with. The action is intense but still age-appropriate, and the mystery at the core is genuinely gripping. My kid tore through it in two days and immediately demanded the sequel.
It fills that Percy Jackson-shaped hole because it’s fast, has a loyal friend group facing huge odds, and the magical system feels new and exciting. The world just pulls you in.

Man, picking something after Percy Jackson is tricky because that series just hits different. The pacing, the humor, it all works so well. My nephew was in a serious slump after finishing it. We tried 'The Heroes of Olympus' as a natural next step, but honestly, the tone shifts a bit and it wasn't the same for him.
What finally clicked was 'The Kane Chronicles' by the same author. It’s got that similar mythological foundation but with Egyptian gods, which felt fresh enough. The sibling dynamic between Carter and Sadie is great. It’s a bit less frantic than Percy’s adventures maybe, but it still has those laugh-out-loud moments and high stakes that keep pages turning.
If they’re burned out on Riordan altogether, I’d say check out 'Fablehaven' by Brandon Mull. It’s got this secret wildlife sanctuary for magical creatures premise that’s just so fun. It starts a little quieter, almost feels like a classic fantasy, but the world-building is solid and the danger escalates in a really satisfying way. It doesn’t have the same modern snark, but the sense of wonder is top-notch.

Everyone knows the mythology of the gods. What happens if what is known was manipulated by the gods themselves. Our favorite triplets are back. This is their story of how they came to be. Follow along as they grow up and find friends, enemies, and their soul bonds along the way. This is book #2 in the series.
They weren't supposed to exist, yet here they are.
"We have to keep them protected" Zeus roars.
"That doesn't mean we have to keep them locked up." Aphrodite states.
The gods turn as they hear the door opens slamming against the wall. There stand the triples. A look of surprise spreads across everyone's face.
"What the hell did you do to your hair and are those tattoos?" Poseidon asks.
"We dyed it, and yes they are tattoos and we also got a few body piercings" Kylani answers.
"We will not stay hidden away or kept locked up. We have no interest in this life. We are going to walk on the earth with the supernatural and humans. They accept us more than you do." Mykenzie announces.
The girls vanish at that moment. Chris stands there with a look of regret in his eyes. He knew this was coming. They wanted sweet, innocent goddesses like their mother and aunts. What they got was an attitude in a 5'4" package only doubled.
"I told you not to force your ways upon them. They have been independent since birth. You brought this upon yourselves." Hades tells them
In the human world, Olympus is merely a fantasy found in books, known as the abode of gods since ancient times. But in another world, Olympus is an enchanted and dangerous place. A place not for gods and goddesses but for peculiar people from the seven castes of power.
However, powers have their limitations, and so does Olympus. And, in the midst of war and darkness, a woman struggling with an identity crisis in the human world has mysteriously entered the enchanted world of Olympus.
In a world where power is the only way to live, will she be able to survive, especially since she has to deal with the man who possesses one of the elemental powers in Olympus?
This isn't just an ordinary world. This isn't just a mere fantasy, nor a figment of imagination. It's the world of Olympus, and it's about the love untold.

Elise has never thought she could be someone special until she is warped into the past—to the Land of Magic—in Ancient Egypt. She finds herself including her brother and a couple of friends in the middle of the battle, between the Scorpion King and the Cobra King.
She needs to choose to forge an alliance with to be able to survive in this ancient time and place and figure out how they can go back to their present time and be reunited with their parents.
The first book in a series about Gods, Godesses, treachery and betrayal. Follow the main character as she learns her strengths and fights to restore the balance of light and dark.
The first book is the only logical starting point. The entire emotional payoff of the series relies on watching Percy, Annabeth, and Grover grow from scratch. Starting anywhere else robs you of that journey. You wouldn't watch 'The Empire Strikes Back' first. The Lightning Thief' is 'A New Hope'. It's non-negotiable.
Honestly, nothing hits quite the same as Percy's original voice, but if you're chasing that feeling of an ordinary kid discovering an extraordinary legacy, I had a lot of luck with 'The Storm Runner' by J.C. Cervantes. It's rooted in Maya mythology, which felt fresh after a lot of Greco-Roman stuff. The hero, Zane, deals with a physical disability and has a really distinctive bond with his dog—it grounds all the godly chaos in a way that reminds me of Percy's loyalty to his mom. The tone is snappy and the stakes get personal fast.
Another one that doesn't get enough talk is Yoon Ha Lee's 'Dragon Pearl', which is basically a space opera blended with Korean folklore. The young heroine uses fox-magic trickery to solve a mystery, and it's less about brute strength and more about cleverness and subterfuge. It scratches that 'young hero on a quest' itch but with a totally different flavor. The sequel expands the universe in a way that makes the series feel huge, almost like 'The Heroes of Olympus' did for Percy's world.
