I think genre expectations matter here. Epic fantasy sagas almost demand an ongoing, unfinished feel to build their immense worlds. The impact is in the scale and the unknown. But a tighter, character-driven fantasy trilogy? Its impact often hinges on a precise, conclusive arc that a never-ending story can't provide. Comparing them is like comparing a long-running TV show to a perfect miniseries. They're aiming for different kinds of resonance. One wants to be a world you live in; the other wants to be a journey you never forget.
I get a different kind of joy from recommending a completed series. It's a full package, a known quantity. I can say, "This trilogy changed my life," and hand it over. Recommending an ongoing saga is a conditional sell: "It's amazing so far, but who knows how it ends?" The act of sharing is less confident. The impact a story has through personal recommendation is huge, and completed series travel more easily and powerfully through those networks of trust.
What about the author's growth? An ongoing saga written over decades can show an incredible evolution in prose style, depth of theme, and character understanding. Watching a writer level up across their own magnum opus is a unique meta-narrative. A series written quickly or one where the author's voice is consistent from the start doesn't offer that. The impact isn't just the story; it's the visible journey of the storyteller themself, maturing alongside their creation. That adds a layer of fascination you don't get otherwise.
I judge impact by how much it influences other creators. Completed series, especially landmark ones, provide a full blueprint. You see their DNA in whole generations of novels that followed. An ongoing saga's influence is more piecemeal; you see elements of its worldbuilding or magic system borrowed, but not its complete narrative structure, because it's not complete yet. The foundational impact on the genre often comes from stories that have shown a full, successful arc from premise to conclusion.
The discourse around them is fundamentally different. A completed series gets analyzed for themes, symbolism, and its place in the literary canon. The conversation is about what it means. An ongoing saga's discourse is dominated by predictions, shipping, and reactions to the latest twist. It's about what will happen. One is a scholarly autopsy, the other is a living sport. Both have value, but they create different kinds of cultural impact. One endures as a monument; the other thrives as a constantly evolving event.
