Let them have a secret that's just for them. Not a plot-relevant secret, but a small, personal one. A childhood nickname they still think of themselves by. A silly fear they've never told anyone. A private ritual they perform. A meaningless object they treasure. This secret self, known only to the reader (and maybe not even fully explained), creates immense intimacy. It says this character has an interior life that exists independently of the story being told.

It makes them feel autonomous, as if they'd have this secret even if you weren't writing about them. That illusion of independent existence is the holy grail of character creation. The reader feels like they've been let in on something true, something that makes the character uniquely theirs.

Consider their economic reality. A character's financial situation (or lack thereof in a non-monetary society) dictates so much: their priorities, their risks, their access to resources, their daily worries. A character struggling to eat will have a different worldview than a character who's never wanted for anything. Even in fantasy or sci-fi, the 'economics' of their world—be it credits, mana, or social favor—will shape their behavior.

Show, don't tell, this reality. Do they count coins? Do they hesitate before buying a drink? Do they take extra bread from the inn 'for later'? Are they acutely aware of the cost of things, or blissfully ignorant? This tangible relationship with resources is a fundamental human experience and grounds the character in a visceral way.

Adaptability under pressure. When plans go wrong, does your character freeze, improvise, blame, or take charge? Their stress response is a core part of their psychology. A character who is calm and collected in normal circumstances might fall apart in a crisis. Another might rise to the occasion only when the pressure is on. There's no right answer, only consistency to their nature.

This also applies to long-term pressure, like a siege or a prolonged journey. Do they maintain discipline, or do they deteriorate? How do their coping mechanisms change over time? Showing the erosion or strengthening of their spirit under sustained stress is a powerful arc in itself. It reveals reserves (or lack thereof) they might not have known they had.
