I've read all the Corey books three times over. My favorite order for a re-read is strictly chronological: 'The Maze', then the rest. It feels like a complete tragic-to-triumph arc. For a first read, I'd never recommend that. You need to be already invested in the character to appreciate the depths of 'The Maze'. Otherwise, it's just a grim cop story with a sarcastic lead.

At the end of the day, Nelson DeMille isn't George R.R. Martin. The books aren't so densely plotted that reading one out of order will ruin staggering twists. The pleasure is in Corey's voice, the pacing, the set-pieces, and the now-nostalgic period details. You could read book 4, then book 1, then the prequel, and still have a good time. The continuity is simple enough to piece together. So relax and grab whatever is available at the bookstore.
