A personal connection to a specific element. Sometimes immersion isn't about the whole package, but one thing that hooks your imagination deeply. For one person, it might be the intricate heraldry and knightly orders. For another, it's the culinary descriptions of fantastical feasts. For me, it's often the libraries—the description of ancient, magical archives with self-writing books and guardian golems.
When an author clearly loves and dwells on a particular facet of their world, that passion is contagious. That one hyper-detailed, lovingly rendered aspect can make the entire world around it feel more real by association.
Pacing the revelation of wonder. You can't blow your load in the first act. Start small. A minor charm, a faint glow, a whispered rumour. Let the reader's curiosity build alongside the protagonist's. Then, when the truly grand magic appears—the living city, the walking mountain—it has maximum impact. It feels earned and momentous.
Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' series is a masterclass in this. It starts in a lonely, weird desert and slowly, slowly peels back the layers to reveal a multiversal epic. The slow burn makes the eventual scale feel believable and utterly immersive.

"I keep the world safe from his people, but now he's the one protecting me.The Sluagh has come for me and nothing stops them. The monsters of Fairy chitter and cackle and screech all around us while Tiernan holds me tightly, hiding us within his magic. Under the cover of some roots, his body laid over mine, we wait. His lips brush my cheek. Our rapid breaths merge. My palms press against his chest, molding to his muscles and pulsing with his heartbeat. The terrifying sounds around us echo into silence but as I stare into his silver eyes I know the danger hasn't passed. This man—this fairy hunter—could tear apart my world.Fairy-Struck is created by Amy Sumida, an EGlobal Creative Publishing signed author."

She had no idea how long she had been sleeping for but she woke up to the sound of someone sniffing. She was drowsy so she paid not much attention to it but then it continued, then she heard the voice again, “Lavender, you use lavender for your hair. How have I never sniffed your hair before?", the sniffing continued.
The sound reverberated through the caves, whilst she felt the vibrations on his chest where she lay, but she did not need that to know whose voice it belonged to. It was deep but not hoarse, somehow it was powerful and soothing at the same time, it was the voice of a god, one that had spoken to her all of these months, one she had replayed over again in her head till it was ingrained in her memory.
“Dragomir…”, she whispered in a teary voice, she proceeded to stand up but he held on to a part of her hair and was sniffing it.
When he noticed her staring at him, he stopped and stared back at her as if she had just caught him trying to steal from the cookie jar.
“Was that creepy?”, he asked.

Pacing the reveal is crucial. Dumping the entire magic system glossary in chapter one is a surefire way to make my eyes glaze over. Let me discover it organically, through the characters' struggles and failures. A hint here, a failed experiment there, a moment of terrifying, unintended consequence. This gradual discovery mirrors how one would actually learn about a complex force of nature, and it builds a sense of mystery and depth that a front-loaded info-dump can never achieve.
The sense of discovery shared between the reader and the characters. We learn about the world's wonders and horrors alongside them. The first time they see the bioluminescent forests, the first time they encounter a forgotten ruin, the first time they use a unique form of magic.
If the protagonist is jaded and knows everything, I feel detached. But if they are also in awe, terrified, or curious, I experience that through them. Falling in love in a world you're both discovering together adds a layer of shared wonder to the romance, making every step of the journey immersive.
