I look for books where the conflict isn't just external misunderstanding, but internal flaws they have to overcome. If the third-act breakup could be solved with a single honest conversation that doesn't touch a core character flaw, the growth is weak. Prime Reading previews are great for scanning the first few chapters to see if the characters' flaws are established early as something that will genuinely hinder a relationship.
Ooh, I just remembered 'The Marriage Game' by Sara Desai! The leads are forced into a series of competitive dates, and their growth is about letting go of preconceived notions about what they should want in a partner and life, and embracing what they actually need. It's fun and banter-filled, but the emotional core is solid.
My comfort re-read for growth is 'Well Met' by Jen DeLuca. Emily's entire arc is about finding a place where she belongs and is valued for her creativity and organization, not just as someone's helper. Simon's growth from a stuck-in-the-past, rule-bound guy to someone who can embrace joy and spontaneity is equally satisfying. Their Renaissance Faire setting acts as a perfect playground for this transformation.
I tend to DNF if I don't see the seeds of growth by the 25% mark. If the character is still behaving in the exact same selfish/clueless/defensive way without any hint of self-awareness, I lose hope that the author is planning a real arc. Prime Reading is great for easy sampling to check for that.

In a werewolf country cursed to be forever cold, Evadne wished under the full moon for many years to find her mate and escape from her hell of a home where her father, Alpha Marcus of the Moonflame Pack, and Elodie, Evadne’s sister, constantly made sure her day won’t end without her being bullied or beaten by them.
When she finally turned eighteen years old, Evadne find her mate, Alpha Gregor of the Fireheart Pack. She promised him that she would be the best mate and Luna for him. However, Elodie reveals he’s her fiance and boyfriend and begs the Alpha to ruthlessly reject her in front of the whole Moonflame Pack at Evadne’s very own birthday party.
Evadne’s heart became even more shattered when her father banished her and ordered her to never return to their lives when she humiliated his favorite daughter, Elodie, on that same night.
Alone, she was imprisoned in the dungeons of a pack that thought she was a Rogue—when it was attacked by the Alpha King’s forces since the said pack was the only remaining one who refused to bow down to him. As she tried to escape the ensuing chaos, she met him, and never had she thought that the Moon Goddess would let her second-chance mate be Alpha King Kallias himself—the cause of the eternal winter and now the most feared Alpha.

In the chaos and quiet of her 30s, a woman reflects on the loves that shaped her, the heartbreaks that undid her, and the tender spaces in between. Through fleeting romances, almost-loves, and the weight of expectations—family’s, society’s, and her own—she navigates a world where connection is currency, vulnerability is rebellion, and self-discovery never comes easy.
Told with wit, warmth, and raw honesty, this novel is a journey through modern love: messy, magical, and sometimes maddening. It's about the people who entered her life, the ones who left, and the version of herself she’s still becoming.

You ever notice how love can feel more like a curse than a blessing? Or maybe that’s just her.She thought love was a weapon. He thought it was a weakness. When fate traps them in a marriage neither wanted, will pain tear them apart—or finally teach them what love really means?
For a darker, more trauma-informed path, 'The Maddest Obsession' by Danielle Lori (book two in the 'Made' series) is fascinating. Gianna and Christian's relationship is a chaotic push-pull over years. Her growth is about moving from a superficial, party-girl armor to confronting her profound loneliness and self-destructive tendencies. His growth is about relinquishing control and acknowledging an obsession that goes against his cold, calculated nature. It's not a healthy blueprint, but the character evolution is compelling because it's so raw and messy. They literally have to hit rock bottom individually before they can build something real together.
