My friend got me into these, and she had a super simple rule: read all the main numbered books back-to-back. Then, if you're dying for more, read the 'Lost Files' omnibus editions in order (I think there are three omnibus collections). Then move on to the 'Legacy Chronicles'.
Trying to interweave them on a first read is a headache you don't need. The main plot is propulsive and fun—don't bog it down by constantly switching to side stories. The novellas are best enjoyed as a deeper dive after you care about the universe. This method kept me hooked instead of overwhelmed.

Honestly, the chronological order question is a rabbit hole for this series. It reminds me of the 'Shadowhunter Chronicles' or 'Percy Jackson' extended universe debates. Once a series gets big enough, the 'correct' order becomes a point of fandom identity.
My take? Life's too short. Pick up 'I Am Number Four'. If you're hooked, you'll naturally seek out the extra content and figure out an order that works for you. Getting bogged down in logistics before page one takes the magic out of discovering a new world.

Lila Harper gave the Black quadruplets her virginity, her loyalty, her soul. Ethan, Marcus, Callum, and Davian were supposed to be her fated mates, destined to share her, protect her, love her.
Instead, they rejected her on her eighteenth birthday, called her weak, and threw her out to die.
Three years later, she's back and she's not the broken omega they discarded. Something happened the night they severed the bond, something that rewrote her from the inside out. Now she walks through Blackwood Territory with power that makes Alphas kneel and a hunger that won't stop until she's taken everything they love.
The quadruplets want her back. The bond is screaming to reconnect. But Lila didn't survive the rejection to fall into their arms again.
She survived to watch them beg.
And when four Alphas who've never begged for anything start crawling back to the mate they destroyed? That's when the real violence begins.

My reading order recommendation is purely chronological within the story’s timeline, but that’s not the simplest for a first timer. If you want simplicity, go with the numbered sequence: Books 1 through 7 as listed on most storefronts. That’s 'I Am Number Four', 'The Power of Six', 'The Rise of Nine', 'The Fall of Five', 'The Revenge of Seven', 'The Fate of Ten', and 'United as One'.
Chronological order would involve weaving in the 'Lost Files' novellas, which show events before and during the early books. But that’s a project for a re-read. The first book drops you right into John’s life on the run, and that’s the best way to start. You learn about the world as he does. Adding prequel material upfront ruins that deliberate mystery.
I see a lot of people stressing about 'getting it right.' The right way is the way you'll actually enjoy and finish. If a complex order feels like a chore, it is. If diving into a detailed timeline excites you, go for it. The books aren't going anywhere. You can always re-read them in a different order later. The first pass is for enjoyment. The second pass can be for completist analysis. Don't let perfectionism rob you of the simple fun of a story about alien teens kicking butt.
The prose is very accessible. It's not overly flowery or dense. That makes the chronological journey easy to follow even when the cast gets large. You're never bogged down in complicated descriptions; the focus stays on action and character interactions.
Because of that, jumping into the middle of the series isn't as confusing as with some epic fantasies, but you'd still miss all the emotional buildup. Why should you care if a certain character dies in book five if you haven't spent four books with them? Order matters for emotional payoff, not just plot comprehension.
