For a deep cut, try 'The Gallery' by John Horne Burns. It's a series of vignettes set in Naples after the Allied liberation. The trauma is everywhere—in the soldiers on leave, the impoverished locals, the black marketeers. It's about the psychological dislocations of victory, the moral hangover, and the strange, desperate connections people make. It's a messy, compassionate, and often overlooked novel.
Can we count 'Gravity's Rainbow'? It's a maximalist, paranoia-soaked nightmare about the V-2 rocket and systems of control. The trauma is epistemological; the world itself is a traumatizing, indecipherable plot. The characters' psyches are collages of fetishes, obsessions, and terror. It's less about a soldier's specific experience and more about the total psychological landscape of a war-wracked world.

I gave Julian Marchetti thirty years of my life after the war ended.
I built his empire, raised his children, and held the family together behind the scenes.
But when he died, his will didn’t even mention my name.
Half his fortune went to our children. The other half went to Lydia Carter, the daughter of the man who’d saved his life in Normandy.
The same Lydia who’d stolen my identity. The same Lydia who’d built her entire life on the ruins of mine.
All he left me was a single note, scrawled in his familiar handwriting.
I loved you. We had thirty good years. But I owe Lydia. This is the least I can do.
I dropped dead of a heart attack right there in his study, clutching that pathetic piece of paper.
When I opened my eyes again, I was reborn in 1945, when the war had just ended
This time I will not swallow my anger and suffer in silence; I will fight back. And I will take back every single thing that is rightfully mine.

Meira was once known as a prodigy—brilliant, beautiful, and destined for greatness. But life didn’t follow the golden path everyone expected.
In high school, she accepted the love of a younger classmate, Hastan, not out of affection, but as revenge against her ex-boyfriend, Octavian. Their relationship was fleeting, cut short by family rules and summer’s end. Meira ended it with a text message—and disappeared from Hastan’s life.
Years later, Meira is no longer the celebrated genius. She is a wife trapped in a crumbling marriage, a mother clinging to her child, and a woman who has long buried her dreams. When her work as a Project Manager on a medical installation project leads her to a military hospital, fate brings her face-to-face with the past.
Hastan is no longer the boy she once discarded. He has risen to become a young Lieutenant Colonel in the Cyber Division—calm, commanding, and far more dangerous. Behind his quiet smile lies a chilling secret: he has hacked into Meira’s phone. Every message, every call, every intimate detail of her fractured marriage is in his hands.
He knows her weaknesses. He knows what will break her. And he knows… she has never truly let him go.
Caught between a marriage not yet dissolved, an obsession growing darker, and a past that refuses to fade, Meira is ensnared in a perilous game of love, revenge, and unquenchable desire.
Mia Halstead, a 26 year old surgeon who’s learned to measure life in precise incisions and careful routines. When a bittersweet goodbye to childhood friends becomes an eight year leap into a town that still holds the ache of first love, Mia finds herself drawn back to the one man who haunted her heart from the start: Dawson Lane.
Dawson, scarred by war and shadowed by nights of sleepless thunder, is the quiet storm she never stopped craving. He’s returned home, tall, guarded, and carrying a history that refuses to stay buried. As Mia navigates high stakes hospital corridors, a meddling sister who runs on caffeine and chaos, and a provocative doctor eager to rewrite her fate, old memories collide with present danger. A lingering crush becomes something more dangerous: the truth that love can heal what fear has kept apart and break what’s never been rebuilt.
When a stalker shadows Mia’s steps, and a pregnancy tests the future in unexpected ways, Mia and Dawson must decide what they’re willing to risk for a chance at a future that isn’t dictated by memory or duty. With Liberty Lane’s unflinching loyalty and a town that aches to belong, Storm-Worn Hearts is a slow burn romance about choosing love when the weather inside you refuses to clear.
‘The Narrow Road to the Deep North' by Richard Flanagan focuses on Australian POWs forced to build the Thai-Burma Railway. The trauma is physical torment raised to an existential level. The protagonist, Dorrigo Evans, carries the guilt of survival and the memory of a lost love, which intertwine with the horrors of the camp. Flanagan suggests that love and beauty can become sources of pain as acute as any torture, making the psychological landscape profoundly complex and sorrowful.
For a game that handles this well, 'Spec Ops: The Line' is a brutal deconstruction of the modern military shooter. Without spoilers, it deliberately puts you, the player, in a position to commit increasingly horrific acts, then forces you to confront the psychological toll. The descent of Captain Walker and his squad into madness, guilt, and denial is mirrored by the game’s mechanics and environment deteriorating. It’s a interactive lesson in the cost of virtual violence and the myth of the heroic soldier. It left me feeling genuinely complicit and unsettled, which was the whole point.
