Jake said, taking the keys. "If you need anything I'll be a call away, sir." Jake nodded his head and Arthur left. I looked around and my eyes landed on the huge picture hanging on the wall. It was Mr. and Mrs. Carter standing with Jake, Jacob, and Veronica. Veronica and Jacob looked in their teens while Jake looked around nine or ten. Jake had a huge smile on his face. He was holding Amanda's hand while she was smiling at him. Veronica and Jacob's hand was resting on their parent's shoulder. They all looked genuinely happy.

Sam cocked his head to one side. "Who do I need to threaten?" Sam asked automatically. Emelie giggled and shook her head. This was the brother she recognized. "Nobody, Mom and Dad love him. His name is Jake, and he plays football at State," Emelie replied. Sam narrowed his eyes. "A guy in college, Emelie? How long have you been seeing him? How old is he?" Sam asked. "We just met last week...and I don't know, he's a sophomore so I'm guessing nineteen or twenty. He's really sweet," Emelie added.

Jake spoke as though he were looking down on something pathetic and disposable.

He glanced at his desk uncertainly. “Look, I had a controlling father who even now is running my life. I am thirty-five and can help steer you in the right direction if you let me.” Todd looked at him again but hesitated to say anything. “It’ll be our secret.” He nodded and took out his pictures. “I don’t want to work here. This is what I want to do. It’s a farm out in North Dakota.” Jake took the pictures and looked through them. “Why do you want to farm?”
