Inside, she was sitting alone at a table by a window, picking at a plate of food.
The plate in front of her had steak—barely cooked, blood pooling under it. Normally that might’ve turned my stomach, but right now? Didn’t even register. The sight of her, so calm, so normal, made the anger boil over.
I didn’t knock. I shoved the door open and marched in. “What’s your game, Nyx?”
She didn’t look up. She speared a piece of meat with her fork. It was practically raw, bloody juice pooling on the white plate. “You look displeased,” she said, her voice flat. “For a man who just got a promotion, you’re terrible at gratitude.”
