That was going to make our search a notch more difficult. I looked at the timer and reset it to forty five minutes.

Everything we knew was just guesswork. We only had our side of the story, and we had no idea what Cassian was dealing with. "Two minutes and eight seconds, "Tang said suddenly, checking the timer. My stomach dropped. "Then what are we waiting for ? "I grabbed his sleeve. "Go, go, go ! " Only two minutes left before the fiveminute deadline. I yelled, staggering toward him. He dodged again, his movements jerky but full of energy. “Oh no, sweetheart,” he said, breathing hard. “You’ll die, they’ll die… but me?” He laughed. “You just made it worse for yourself. It was supposed to go off in an hour.” He looked down at the timer and chuckled. “Oops. Twenty-six minutes left.” “You bastard!” I shouted and lunged at him again…but then I saw it. The numbers blinked faster—24:00.

"They stay down this time." He glanced at his watch. "Countdown started. Seventy-two hours."

For a moment, I stared blankly at him, unable to come back to my senses. Jude frowned when I didn’t react. His eyes flashed with impatience. His fingers tightened around the small timer in his hand. The air felt heavy. But— When I thought he would yell again, he suddenly went quiet. Too quiet. He raised the timer slowly, then pointed at it. “I’ll set this timer,” he said, his voice lowered this time, “and you need to circle this training ground in less than seven minutes.” My eyes widened. But he didn’t stop.

Sure enough, the guard returned exactly five minutes, thirty seconds later and stayed for seven minutes before he left. “We have at most eight minutes thirty seconds.” I nudged him out the door. He already knew where to rush as soon as I started the timer for seven minutes. I plugged my earpiece on and waited for his signal. A minute and a half later, his voice came on. “All the surveillance cameras are off. Blackout coming up in thirty…twenty-nine…” What the fuck?” I interrupted his countdown. No one said anything about a blackout.

“Great! His coffin’s in the backyard of the second floor. Let’s go now.” They were about to leave, and I could feel their footsteps lift, but the second guy suddenly paused. “Hey, before we start, let me make it clear. We’ll only spend ten minutes inside.” “To do what?” “To try waking him, of course.” “You pulling my leg? What exactly is ten minutes going to do for someone who hasn’t moved no matter how many tries?” “Then… fifteen minutes.” “Don’t frustrate me.” “Twenty minutes, then! No more, no less.”

I ask, trying hard to remain calm. “What do you think I’m going to do with it?” He asks, as he reaches down and pulls me alongside him as he straps the vest to me. After one last buckle, I hear the chime of a counter ring out. I look down to see a digital clock on my front, visibly counting down. Whatever is going to happen will be happening in just under three hours. “What's the timer for?” I ask, knowing full well that it means I have less than three hours to live.
