Amelia found herself sleeping poorly despite her exhaustion, her mind cycling through scenarios she couldn't quite silence even with Damian's steady presence beside her each night. "You're not sleeping," Damian observed one morning, studying the shadows beneath her eyes with quiet concern. "This waiting is wearing on you." "I keep thinking about everything that could still go wrong," Amelia admitted. "What if he finds out somehow, before they can arrest him? What if he does something reckless, something that hurts someone, once he realizes he's cornered?"

But once planted, a doubt isn't easily uprooted, and she felt that new worry settle in alongside all her other fears, heavy and unwelcome. She glanced at her old phone, confirmed the recording had come through successfully as usual, then lay back down in bed. But she stayed awake until dawn broke, her eyes open in the dark, unconsciously listening to the sound of rain that wasn't falling outside, yet kept echoing stubbornly in the depths of her troubled memory.

He teased as he calmed down, and I groaned. “I can tell you what I’m thinking—what a dumb ass you are,” I grumbled, and he laughed, sitting down. I watched him as he calmed down and shook his head. “So where’d you get this idea from? That you hear people’s thoughts?” He asked. I obviously couldn’t tell him that I heard Amanah’s thoughts of all the ways I apparently affected her and how much I was an annoying huge man who was a mama's boy—which isn't true—but then again, everyone was entitled to their own opinions, even when they were wrong.

I'm beginning to wonder if there's anything like a head popcorn or something. ["You're distracting me with your stupid thoughts."] Amanda snapped at me which frightened me more than it should. I guess I thinking too deep again. Yeah that reminds me, how can I be thinking when I'm in the source of all my thoughts? Huh, interesting. ["You're unbelievable!"] After the declaration, she put up a mental wall so she wouldn't have to listen to my ridiculous thoughts in my own head—something that I find fascinating. I cleared my head —in my head—of every unnecessary thoughts and focused on Amanda and Scar.

Tony’s Perspective Sitting in the chilly hospital waiting room, I couldn't help but notice my trembling hands, my gaze fixed on the floor. Quietly, I pondered, "What should my next move be?" The image of Amelia barely conscious in the passenger seat haunted me as I hurriedly brought her here. Memories of the explosion, the ensuing chaos, kept flashing in my mind. What if I hadn't been there on time? What if I had delayed a minute longer? I pushed away those thoughts firmly.

Amelia sat in the car with so many thoughts going through her head . She didn’t want to know what was happening next , but she was really curious about what today would give to her even though she hoped that it was for the best . The man that had taken her away from the prison was the one driving the car . She knew that she couldn’t trust this man because everything seemed to be done in secret , but what she was scared of , there was absolutely no reason for her to get scared , she had seen and gone through the worst things of life and so nothing could move her at this point .

“Good luck with that, Sera.” For a moment, she said nothing. Then she laughed, a sound so cold it made the hairs on my arms stand on end. “You really don’t understand what’s happening, do you? The drug isn’t just opening your mind, Amala. It’s rewriting it. Every vision, every suggestion…,they’re becoming part of you. Soon, you won’t be able to tell where your thoughts end and mine begin.”

It was deeper than that, and I’d known the difference since the second night I woke at 2am with it and spent an hour in the dark deciding it was nothing. I moved my hand and looked at the ceiling. Thursday, I told myself. Thursday it would make sense. I almost believed it.

“Just a thought.” She left. I sat in the empty boardroom. The door clicked shut. The sun kept coming through the east windows, cutting across the table in long pale lines. I turned that last sentence over in my head the way you turn something small and sharp between your fingers. Warm air plays tricks. It was nothing. A throwaway line. It meant absolutely nothing. I had been telling myself that since 3 AM. Zane appeared in the doorway approximately four seconds later, which meant he’d been standing right outside it.

My body convulsed as the medicine surged through me, crushing the rising shift. I screamed again, my voice breaking, tears streaming down my face. The pressure inside me slowly began to fade. The wolf retreated. Darkness crept into the edges of my vision as exhaustion crashed over me. But one thought stayed clear in my mind: As long as I breathe, Amelia will live. And no fate, no wolf, no king would change that.
