The thing that the physical acuteness had been, in its way, covering, the way significant physical events sometimes had the quality of consuming the available attention and leaving the other processing for the after. The after had arrived. I began to have thoughts I had not had space for in the first week. They arrived in the way of thoughts that had been waiting, not loudly, not with the urgency of thoughts that demanded immediate processing, but with the patient quality of thoughts that had been in the queue and were now, the queue having cleared, beginning to move forward. The first thought arrived on a Tuesday morning.

AMARA'S P.O.V The space on the hook gaped at me like an open wound. One hook empty, one still holding my keys. His absence was loud, louder than any slammed door or shouted word. I couldn’t move. My body stayed frozen in the hallway, bare feet glued to the cold floor, eyes fixed on the missing keys as if staring long enough could summon him back. I'm stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea. This is so far the most decisive moment of my life. “Think, Susan. Think. Why are you so dumb?” I spanked my forehead just to get some solutions.

The mere thought sent her heart racing, and she found it nearly impossible to contain her curiosity. Questions swirled in Amber’s mind. What secrets lay hidden in their shared past that had shaped their ‘guy’ into the man he is right now?
