"Raze." "Two new recruits cleared vetting this week. Both former military, both clean on background. I want them on probationary rotation before they're given anything that matters." "Agreed. Thirty days minimum." "Thirty days," he said, and didn't push for less, even though I knew he could have argued for less and made it sound reasonable, could have leaned on the fact that we were short-handed at the eastern relay and dressed the shortage up as urgency. He didn't. He'd stopped doing that months ago, somewhere around the time he'd stopped needing to test whether I'd hold a line once I'd drawn it.

Due to the severity of the situation, the school decided to extend her suspension by another month and give her an official demerit. … The next week was unbelievably peaceful. Without Matthias and Evelyn around to bother me, and with Derrick's sharp, straightforward guidance, it felt like my brain, which had been unused for years, suddenly broke free and started working at full speed. So, I was not as hopeless as Matthias had said. If I actually tried, I could learn. The next time I saw Matthias was a week later. He looked much more worn out than before, with dark circles under his eyes. Being stuck at home because of his relationship probably had not been easy.

Adia was staring at the L on her necklace. Kael took her hand again. Laced their fingers. “Tomorrow the headlines will be worse,” he said. “Then they’ll get bored and find someone else.” “And us?” Adia asked. Her voice was small. Kael looked at her. "Not up to 3 days, I don't think it's even up to 2 days." An impish grin tugged at the corner of his lips. "2 days doesn't seem much. We've been here for 2 weeks now and we'll leave here soon in the next 3 to 4 days to look for the gem. It's going to be the crimson moon soon and that's the perfect time to strike."

"Oh my god! I have been trying to get a reservation there for me and Jordan. It's impossible without a three month wait." "George's father is friends with the owner. Just let me know when you want to go, and I'll set it up." "Seriously! You're amazing!" "It pays to have a best friend with connections." "Ma'am?" The manager asked, seriously confused about my order. "I want the receipt to be delivered with my wine on Monday. Is that okay with you, Sebastian?" I looked at him and he nodded.

I set it down carefully, my full attention on the phone. "When?" I asked, my voice steadier than I felt. "Thirty days from today. October twentieth." The kitchen seemed to tilt slightly.
