Jane’s lips moved soundlessly, maybe a prayer.
One by one, they went. Each girl walking up on legs that barely held them. I watched them press trembling hands to that dark cover, listened to their voices, some stumbling through the words as if they could outrun the meaning. Others seemed almost desperate, tears streaking down their cheeks, voices breaking. Each time, the silver clasps on the book glowed with a faint, eerie light. The air thickened, twisting in on itself until it felt like trying to breathe through wet cloth.
