His eyes closed, his jaw trembling once, and then he nodded, a single tear slipping down his weathered cheek.
Emily leaned forward, wrapping her arms around him. For a moment, he froze — Ghost, who had never been touched without flinching, never let anyone close. Then his arms came around her, strong, certain, pulling her in like he’d been waiting seventeen years for this.
They sat like that in the silence, two broken pieces finally finding the shape they’d been missing.
Emily whispered into the space between them. “We’ll end him. Together.”
Ghost’s voice rumbled low against her hair. “Together.”
