Romans & histoires A Moth To Flame Chapter 1

Then I picked it up and held it in both hands and felt the warmth that came off it immediately — steady and deep and familiar in the way that the flame was familiar, in the way that my wrist mark was familiar, in the way that certain things are familiar not because you have encountered them before but because they belong to something in you that is older than your own memory. I opened the first page. The title was written in the common tongue in handwriting so old it was barely legible, the ink faded to the palest brown, the letters formed in a style that belonged to another century. “The place is already set. A few more splashes and the fire will eat everything, including you.” I screamed, “You’re insane!” She tilted her head. “Maybe. But I’m rich and free. You? You’ll be ash.” She emptied the last of the fuel on me—my legs, my arms, my hair. I tried to pull away, but I couldn’t move. My whole body trembled from fear and cold liquid. “Burn her,” she told the men, voice calm like she was ordering lunch. I screamed, loud enough to shake the walls. “Someone help! reeva, please!”

Her face is just blank! "W-what do you need from me?" I answered bravely. She looked at my reflection and I was surprised by what I saw in her eyes...bloodlust. "I might tell you a story...there is a moth who is dancing near a raging fire. And then the moth didn't notice that she is being eaten up by the fire and died. The end." I stopped myself from panicking, no I can't let my bloodlust eat me again. If so, I won't remember these things he said to me. I need details!

My body perceives the moonlight, it is like a thin cascade of water that crosses my skin, I tremble when I feel it for the first time, my back arches and my body begins to ache inordinately, the bones break and a strange fur forms around my body, the first thing I do after writhing from the pain, is howl, howl loudly at the moon. The flames chase me, the fire that consumed my entire home chases me in a brutal and unbridled way, it does not stop, even when the snow continues to fall, even when the night is so beautiful, the fire manages to persist in that horrific scene.

Hand on the knob. The house burned behind her, slowly, elegantly. The kind of fire that didn’t destroy, only reminded you what had already been lost. She didn’t look back. Didn’t breathe. Didn’t cry. She turned the handle. The door creaked open. And behind it, There was no sky. No ground, Just a single chair. Facing away from her. Someone sat in it. Reading, A book made of bone. Their voice hummed. And the page they read out loud was Chapter 101.

It pulsed beneath my palm like a heartbeat. I exhaled slowly and pressed my hand against the page. The flames came instantly. They swallowed the book in a soundless roar, a fire without smoke or heat. Before Silas could yank me away, the blaze leapt and coiled around me like serpents. My vision swallowed itself. One blink I stood in our chamber and the next I stood on snow. A village lay in front of me, small and poor and full of smoke. The air smelled of frost. Children chased one another through the mud with sticks and no shoes. I heard laughter and the reason it hurt was because I knew it would not last.

I don’t need time, I need his mouth and I need the answer to the question that’s been scraping at my bones since the first time he looked at me like I wasn’t a child. He leans in and my lashes lower instantly with the world narrowing to breath and heat and the inch between us that’s about to disappear. “Girls who play with fire,” he murmurs, his lips a breath from mine, “don’t get to cry about the burn.” “I won’t cry,” I whisper. “I’ll beg.” Something flashes in his eyes. And then his mouth catches mine. End of Chapter 1

“Enjoy it while it is hot.” I stiffened, but kept my eyes on her, waiting for her to finish what she wanted to saw. “There’s a little thing about moths,” she continued calmly, almost indulgently. “They’re always drawn to the brightest fire. They always believe that it is going to save them. It is seen as stupid and foolish, but there is no one to actually stop them. If there was, they wouldn’t be as foolish as to try and burn themselves alive.” Her lips curved faintly. “But they always burn once it grows too bright. Just like you will.”

Chapter One: The Day Everything Burned "Sera! Come see the butterfly cocoons! They are starting to split open!" I dropped my handful of wildflowers and raced toward Mama's voice, my bare feet slapping hard against the warm stone path. The garden smelled like sweet jasmine and wet earth, and I was already planning to ask Papa if we could stay out here until the stars came out so we could count them together like we always did on clear nights. A scream tore through the peaceful afternoon air, and I froze completely, the scattered petals drifting down around my feet. Another scream pierced through the garden, followed by shouting—so much shouting it sounded like the whole pack house was on fire
